There is alot of talk on here about how deer hunting shows
affect other hunters expectations. How does it affect yours? For
me personally, I have hunted in Tennessee for going on 45 years
and I know what is real.

I must admit I like watching them though, but they don't change
my expectations. I guess they do make me dream more and get me
excited for the season. As far as the products they endorse,
some are good......and some are not "REAL".

I was infatuated with killing big mature bucks before I ever watched any hunting show. Not all hunting shows are fictitious, for instance, lee and Tiffany along with the drurys, have gone 46 days without killing a buck, just because they are hunting Iowa, that doesn't mean that a booner is waiting for them behind every tree, they still work hard for their big bucks.

I love watching them and don't mind all the commercials selling some neat products...... After hunting for more then 30 yrs... in Florida and Tennesse, I realize that alot of bucks killed on T.V. will probably never walk in front of my stand... A lot of these guys on T.V. get to hunt the best areas and managed properties in the U.S. It also doesn't hurt that they have guides and property owners helping them locate these mature bucks.... Having said all that, maybe one day I will win the lottery and visit some of those great hunting properties..... For now, I'm happy that I'm in good health and still get to enjoy this great sport we all have in common...JMO

Where I hunt, I think you can kill a great TN buck. What I mean by being great 120" to 130" buck. Does have to be this big. No!!!! Not for me to be happy. I do like them to be 3.5 years old

Just to add some perspective to this I was watching some last night (I love them but realize they arent realistic) and here are some facts.

Lee "We have 600 acres of food plots." I dont believe this counts farming fields this is what they plant for hunting locals.

Guy from Dream season Celeberty: "This is our 12th straight day hunting"

Now I have so goals in my life to aquire land and so on and so forth but 300-500 acres of mostly hardwoods is as much as I can reasonably expect. So 600 acres of food plots and hundreds of stands and probably hundreds of trail cams all seed stands and cams for free aint gonna happen. All this and in some seasons Lee has hunted 50 something days before getting a good video/kill opportunity at a mature 150+ buck

12 days straight: Doubt that will ever happen for me unless I live on the land and even then my prospective wife would probably put my foot down at some point. Maybe when Im retired...another 25 years minimum.

This is just the reality of what they do to put those shows on the air. I believe I can see and have a crack at 1 3.5 or better any year here in KY. Last year was the pits for weather but I still had a shooter at 70 yards and passed numerous 115's. However, I spent a lot of time on stand averaging 15 hours a week through out the season....

Hunting shows are no different than any other show you watch on TV, its entertainment and commercials and should be viewed as such! I dont blame these people for getting paid to do what they love to do. Now the bogus bs they spew to sell a product gets old, but its what pays the bills and anyone watching should view it as such! Its all about the money boys and girls, the hunting industry is absolutely no different, its all about the money!!!!

I have hunted DIY style for 15 years and I know what is real and what isn't, thus I take MOST shows with a grain of salt! I believe MOST IF NOT ALL shows are misleading to some extent because they do not show "everything" that happened during the course of the hunt in the "exact order" it took place. IMO, this sends a deceiving message to the average hunter who does not know any better. Furthermore, I was in northern IL this past weekend looking at some land and met some of the Drury film guys as they were looking at the same land to film hunts on this fall. We discussed this exact topic and they admitted themselves that most if not all shows are cut and edited to death to depict a certain scenario when truthfully that is not how the hunt happened. This is why I have little to no respect for MOST hunting shows!

What I like most about deer hunting shows is the memories it brings out about my own experiences. Usually just the terrain they are set up in or just how the area may look, gets me to thinking about particular hunts in my life. And like some others have said, you can tell when its obviously "fake" or set up. i.e. Hank Parker, Jimmy Sykes. I love being in the woods and tv helps with a little supplement when the real deal can't be done. And even though the volume may be on, I rarely listen to what is being said. If you want to learn something... buy a book, read it, and most importantly understand it.

Most shows have the up-to-date gadgets and equipment. I like to see what is new on the market. I've bought many products on those shows and some work well and some do not work as well. I also just like to see hunts from other parts of the country and also find that watching those guys and gals getting all pumped up before and after a kill also gets me fired up for season.
It may not be the kind of hunting the average hunter around here is but it IS hunting just the same.
