I am sure it will scare some away. The problem is that mixing something in a bottle may smell like fresh earth to you, but to a deer which has a very sophisticated sense of smell it more then likely is not giving the same odor.

A deer's sense of smell is good enough, that it can separate odors, and easily separate your odor from anything used to try and cover it up.

Bottom line, deer down wind 90% chance it spooks no matter what you have on, wear, or shower in. Deer upwind, almost zero chance the deer spooks by smelling you. In other words, hunt smart, watch the wind, and forget the bogus products made for hunters.

This year I am going to do away with any scents, except for washing my clothes and hanging them out. The deer in my area get spooked at every scent on the market. I have tried doe pee, fresh earth scent wafers, and everything in between. I have used the doe urine during mid November til the first week in December. The deer walk right up to it like they are about to be attacked. Once they come across that scent trail, it is over. They are gone. I think that most scents can cause more harm than good. I am going to prove it to myself this season.

I have been blown at and busted so many times when using most scents on the market. I have tried year after year to use drag rags when walking in to my stand or blind. Some people swear by it, but the only thing I have ever had to come in on a drag rag was some nosy neighbor dogs. I have watched deer walk across the same drag line, and they would come to a complete stop, then blow and run off the direction they came from. I am very careful about my clothes and try to make sure they are scent free as possible. I know it is the drag rag or the hanging scent wafers that keep tipping them off. They are relaxed and meandering around like nothing is happening, til they come across one of those scents or drag lines. I will not use anything this year.

I agree on going completely scentless. Pressured deer seem to be wise to most of the commercially available scents. Furthermore, many hunters that do use them, overuse them. Plus, many of the cover scents don't agree with the smells of the particular forrest you are hunting and therefore smell out of place to deer.

Scent free is the way to be.

Commercial scents are a joke imo. The best thing I've ever used is tarsal glands from deer from another piece of property.

For some reason it has to be from another tract of land. I honestly think that most deer know the scent of the local deer but if you introduce an intruder they go crazy. I actually had to shoot a buck about 4 years ago b/c I thought he was gonna attack me. I had a tarsal gland attached to my climber and could not get to it and he just kept coming. I really didn't want to shoot him but when he got to 5 yards I capped him. I'm not really in to getting humped or stabbed by deer and he was gonna do one of the two! \:D

Who did these tests? How were the tests done?

IMO all the scents, clothing, washes, etc etc are bogus and designed to dupe hunters into spending money.

Being as scent free as possible is much much better than using another scent to try and cover your scent. As stated above, deer can differentiate scents, therefore you smell like an acorn with a nasty arse hunter eating it! I try to be as scent free as possible and forget all the sales pitches!

I have a friend from Michigan who is VERY successful using real tarsal glands. He agrees the tarsals have to have come from a buck from a different area. That's probably because any local buck's smell is "already known" by the local buck population. But the smell of a "new" buck, especially an older one, seems to draw the most responses.

I haven't done this before, but its been suggested to me by a very experienced hunter to remove the tarsal glands of any bucks you kill and freeze them for next season. Can't go wrong with the real thing.

Hmmm...the next roadkill buck I see will be missing some tarsal glands. \:D

Someone on here once told me that not all dirt smells the same. My guess is the more scent free you are, the better it is.

I've used the earth scent dryer sheet in a pinch, but not that often. Whenever possible, I try to air dry my clothes.

My friend in Michigan had it down to a real science. Somewhere I've got a video of him describing and showing the process. He would not only cut off the tarsal gland but also remove the buck's urine from his bladder with a syringe. Then he would cut the tarsal into strips, put each strip into an air-tight baggy, add some urine to each baggy/tarsal strip and then freeze them for future use. He also punched a hole at one end of each tarsal strip. He would use this for hanging the tarsal up with string. He would unthaw a tarsal when he needed a new one and put it in an air-tight film canister for transportation. He would use two tarsal strips for each bow setup, placing them about 20 yards to his left and right and slightly upwind of his stand position. Then any buck moving downwind from either direction would catch the tarsal scent BEFORE encountering his scent and the buck would move by within bow range as he was working his way up the scent stream towards the tarsal.

Thats exactly how scent is supposed to be used correctly, as you already know BSK. You want the deer to hit the intended scent stream BEFORE he hits yours, and if lucky he will follow it up and past you allowing the shot. The last thing you want to do is mix the attractant scent with your own human scent, which is exactly what many people do by simply hanging the scent around their stands in random locations. Im not at all a big fan of attractant scents, but I do know from experience that there is much more to being succesful with them than simply putting it out and hoping for the best! lol

I shy away from the scent products but use the scent away stuff. I think that stuff works to a degree. If it gives me 5 more yards without getting busted then that 5 yards might be the differnce.

I can't tell you how many bucks I have collected the urine out of their bladder..I always just snip it with a pair of scissors tho and collect it in glass vile...I never froze any of it tho. I refrigerated it and used it with in the next few days..now I have froze alot of tarsal glands...

I USE NO COVER SCENT WITH THE EXCEPTION OF COW MANUER. THE FARM I HUNT HAS CATTLE IN THE WOODS AND PASTURES. A STEP IN A FRESH PILE WITH A LITTLE ON SIDES OF THE BOOTS AND ON THE TREE STAND WORKS GREAT. IF I HUNT WHERE THERE ARN'T CATTLE THEN I CHANGE BOOTS AND USE NO SCENT OR JUST A RUB OF A LOCAL CEDAR TREE LIMB ON MY CLOTHS. BOTH ARE NATURAL, FROM THE AREA AND DO NOT ALARM THE DEER.

Because cover scents don't work, I don't use them.

I don't use attractant scents because I don't want to draw a deer's attention to my location.

But that's just the way I hunt. I certainly understand those who like "calling" or drawing deer to them. Kinda' like turkey hunting.

No but only reason I use them is so it might cover you scent a little longer letting me get the shot on the deer.also the spray feels good after walking in and climbing a tree.Stops me from sweating so it might help a little.Biggest thing I believe helps is being in a stand where you scent rises over the deer in the morning anyway.

Oh, I'm a HUGE fan of scent-reducing products, but I don't use COVER scents (a scent that supposedly is strong enough to cover your human scent) because they can't possibly work.

I think COVER scent is the wrong term for these products. It should be "masking" scents. However you are not gonna mask your scent from a deer either.

Personally I use the scent free soap and deo. My clothing is washed is scent free soap. I rarely use any sprays unless they are also unscented. Less scents=more success.

Any smell that is not normal can spook a spooky deer.
I use Cedar chips. Not many places in Tn. you won't find cedar trees.I put them in old socks, put the sock in the wash and in the dryer.I also put them in trash bags to store my hunting clothing. The chips can be reused many times and still smell like cedar.
