Do any of you ever preseason sit in a stand just to see what's in an area? Maybe not sit right on a spot that you anticipate to hunt, but maybe some distance off as to not disturb the area too much?

Good question and I hope some people give some answers. I was wondering if sitting in the actual tree I hunt in the preseason would make the deer comfortable.

I've done that a few times several years ago back when I had plenty of time. I was new to climbing stands and was also experimenting with them while monitoring.
You wanna be very careful doing this however and probably wear some FL orange. Squirrel hunters aren't yet expecting the treestands to be occupied and may not pay any attention.

Good point....410 or .22 will kill a man deader than stone if hit in the right spot.

No, heck no. I do not contaminate the areas I hunt before the season. I do not go there, except to plant food plots, period. I do all of the other stuff either during the season (trail cams), or post season (clearing shooting lanes etc etc).
I think the main reason people fail to see/kill mature bucks is because they get too worked up too early, and destroy the chances of having good hunting throughout the season.
IMO human intrusion is one of the number one reasons why people have limited success each season.

I agree with you Setterman, but I think there are circumstances where it would be ok. Maybe sitting in a clearcut and watching where deer exit the woods out into the clearcut. I definitely wouldn't sit in my hunting stands before season.

No. I do watch some large fields from barns on occasion but am never anywhere close to where I will be hunting. I just like seeing what bucks are around and watching the deer.

I have never sat in a stand to watch them but I have glassed them many times. Last year I knew a good buck was in the area and I would sit in a barn just about every morning and evening to watch him from about 200 yards away. I knew his pattern like clockwork. That buck is hanging on my wall right now and scores 162.

Most places I hunt here in east TN. you cant see 50 yards, let alone a few hundred!

I have some scouting stands set up in out of the way places, usually on field edges. I don't actually hunt field edges, so there is no detrimental affect on my hunting properties.

I don't,....I can generally tell by the sign as what to expect from one season to the next...small game hunting gives me the opportunity to get a feel for how things are gonna go..or at least how I think I can expect them to go...I don't need to see specfic deer to get me into the mind set....

I'll scout some from the truck at LBL or sit on the edge of a field out back to see what is coming out in the evening. When I go out back I like to have a way to leave the spot so I can get back home without disturbing the deer.

Here is my take on it...If you did your scouting after the last season then you will know what is in the area you hunt. To me that is the most important scouting time is right after the season. That's when I make all my stand moves for the up coming season. I will place camera's out the 1st of July and check them every 2 weeks or so but stay clear of your hunting area as much as possible...they are there...

I don't go looking. I've been hunting the same two farms for several years now and I have seen excellent stand locations turn completely around due to hanging stands in the same spot/checking trail cams/riding around on a 4 wheeler, etc. This year I'm not even putting the cameras out. No one (who's not trespassing) has been on those ridges since I took stands down in January. I want to see if it makes a difference.
In a different situation...on a lease, on public land, etc., I'd be a lot more aggressive.

In times past, I've watched fields from afar. Then usually I'll go in a couple weeks before season and mark a couple of spots and slip back out.

I plan to do a little scouting during squirrel season.
Do ya'll take extra care to be scent free while squirrel hunting to limit intrusion and impact on local bucks?

NO WAY!I dont go near any of my stands until its killing time! There is no sense in alerting the deer just to maybe get a look at them!
