I spoke with a 20 year B/C scorer not long ago. He explained to me that the B/C scoring system was based on a main frame 8 point. After listening to him explain how things work, I realized I DON'T LIKE IT. AT ALL. In fact, I've still not tried to enter the last couple in "the book" just because all this NET stuff irritates me so much.

I didn't realize all this stuff until I met Ben Layton to get a couple deer scored. A Prince of a fellow. ( I believe his wife is "Fiesty Red HEad" on Tn. deer). Man was I "educated".

I learned that a deer can be a CLEAN, symetrical 8 point, with average mass and LONG tines. Add a good spread and you may have a TYPICAL 140 inch deer NET. 144 inch GROSS.

BUT...score a MASSIVE 10 point (6x4) with LOADS of character, stickers, and a decent spread, average tine length but not very symetrical, and he may only NET 130. EVEN THOUGH HE LOOKS HUGE and grosses 160.

RIDICULOUS!!!

Still, it takes one HECK of a deer to NET 150. OR GROSS IMO!

So....wonder what the typical, world record would be by gross score, and also why B&C went with the rules that are in place now,got to admit they have high standards,170 is minimum for their book?WOW,thats a really, really big buck.

I would use the data to tell me that,.. not a soil chart or a P@Y or B@C chart,.. but one of the best sources,. TWRA DATA!!

Montgomery co produces more bucks harvested with 11 pts or more over every other county. SO,.. thats a good starter.

BUT,.. for me,.. lincoln co would be my choice. Its always in the top 5 counties producing big bucks with 11 pts or more by the data. Plus,.. its closer,.. less drive time.

hunting the counties that show regular success is a ood idea. But remember, one needs to balance opportunity with frequency. In other words, it may be better for one to hunt a bunch in a county that has only a few big bucks as opposed to hunting Little in an area he can only hunt rarely.

Why? because when you hunt BIG Mature bucks, you need to KNOW the property you hunt.

Thats why i just stay in my home county,.. and hunt the places i know best. BUT,.. if i were to venture out,.. i would try lincoln co first. HECK,.. truth be known,.. i'll take a excellent managed QDM property anywere across this state ,.. and the chances are just as good in any county in this state with proper management.

I believe the BTR system will give you what you want.

IF you add in the inside spread. Their argument against inside spread is ludicrous ("It's a measurement of air!"). Everyone knows spread is a major part of the visual impression and size of a rack.

I agree spread is a major part of "visual impression" and I love a good wide rack. But it is a measurement of air. Two deer can have identical amount of antler but one will be rated better than another just because it grew at a different angle. Also a tall rack is a big part of visual impression but I have never seen a deer measured from it's bases to the tallest point.

Either way I still score them all with gross score including spread. Had one miss record books due to deductions but doesn't bother me cause I still have the memory of the hunt embedded in my head and that is priceless.

Usually,a wide spread is indicative of long main beams, usually, but not always
