Several problems. First is safety amd not being able to what is beyond your target. Second, deer have to time to rest, mate, eat without being pressured. Third, imagine how hard it would be for people to sleep with high powered rifles going off at 2 am. Fourth, it would law enforcements job much much harder and more dangerous. And finally, think about the workers who get fired for sleeping on the job after hunting all night. Plus, do we really need more time deer hunt. The season now runs continually from sept-jan.

would love to view them at night to see there routines! I love the study of their habits. I would love to do radio collared studies of them also and have it plotted on a map the entrie sequences of their routines for an entire year. With theoverlays done in seasons...winter, spring ,summer fall so you could see the seasonal changes in both habitat and weather effects and summer ranges versus winter, fall etc...... this fascinates me.
That kind of data will blow your mind, I promise you!
But I think most experienced hunters would hate that data. It would destroy everything they thought they knew about deer, and so many hunters have so much of their ego tied into their belief in their own knowledge about deer behavior that they couldn't withstand the humbling experience of finding out the truth.

If you want to see some of this data, consult past issues of Journal of Wildlife Management, or get a copy of "White-tailed deer ecology and management", L.K. Halls, ed., Stackpole Books.
However, I agree with BSK, most of the time when someone sees that kind of data, they respond by downplaying the science because that's not what thier pappaw taught them.
As for night hunting, it would not only be a safety issue, but the hunters would have much too large an advantage. While deer can see at night, they cannot see nearly as far as during the day. A person with a high powered rifle and night vision could kill a deer from well outside a deers field of view.

Many people can "see" at night, but they don't have real night vision. Our eyes do not have the layer many animals have. That is why many animals eyes "shine" when you shine a light on them at night, but ours do not. The extra layer in thier eyes (Tapetum Lucidum) allows them to gather more light than we can, giving them better night vision.

Exactly. Or worse yet, if it doesn't match the whole system they've conjured in their mind to fit their daylight observations of deer.

20/15, 20/10, 20/5 vision has nothing to do with being able to see at night. All those numbers mean is how far away from something you can be and still read it. For example, 20/10 vision means that you can read something a 20 feet that most people with average vision must get to within 10 feet to read.
