My wife and I were talking last night about deer season. She asked a question that I had no answer for......
"Why can't you hunt deer at night?" she asked. "It would be cooler and more people that work could hunt...." she added.
I went in to the whole spill about spotlighting etc. and she said," NO, not spotlighting, but if you had night vision equipment, what would be the difference in hunting deer with that and hunting them during daylight.?"
I had no answer....other than "it's illegal"......
Anyone ever wondered what it would be like to hunt deer at night? I don't mean spotlighting, but using night vision technology.....
I've often wanted to simply go out to certain stands and sit there all night and use night vision stuff ....I think it would be cool to watch the deer and see how they act versus how they act during daylight hours.
Other than the obvious safety issues, are there any other reasons why something like this would be considered unethical?
I mean, we all know that deer would still have the upper hand simply because of their heightened senses. With today's camo, hunters blend in enough during the day so that they appear invisible as long as they don't move. And we all know that a deer's other senses change none in the dark....
Just thought I'd see what you guys think......
I need to start hunting, my mind is going all over the place....lol.
thanks

Years ago I once had a buddy that told me that in certain countries they would hunt deer at night and would use fire torches for light...
Here something I found about hunting in Germany: Traditional hunting in Germany is done from a tree stand in the morning and evening hours. For Roe Bucks especially. But I know some areas where "still" hunting is possible as well. The guide there loves to still hunt himself and he was easily convinced to offer that option to our clients. During the bright night phases of a full moon, Boar hunting is also done at night.

would love to view them at night to see there routines! I love the study of their habits. I would love to do radio collared studies of them also and have it plotted on a map the entrie sequences of their routines for an entire year. With theoverlays done in seasons...winter, spring ,summer fall so you could see the seasonal changes in both habitat and weather effects and summer ranges versus winter, fall etc...... this fascinates me.

I was coyote hunting one night when we lived in VT on a cold january night. Bright full moon on knee deep snow you can see like daytime. I was calling with a fawn in distress, had a fawn decoy out. Next thing I knew a bunch of deer were coming across the field. They were not happy and would not go away. One big doe came within 10 yrds and was MAD. she jumped and bucked. I stood up and spoke...didnt matter. after shutting the player off and waiting 20 min they went away. Neat to see that at night. made me a little nervous!!!

i think one reason people wouldnt like it is cause of gun shots all through out the night during gun season.

Safety would have to be a big concern. Not so much of what your target is but what is beyond your target that you cannot see. With night vision devices, everthing becomes two dimensional and you cannot judge distance very well.
