I wonder if it would be harder for a blood hound to find a convict, if the criminal sprayed himself down with scent control before he escaped.
Point being, a deer's nose is as good, if not better, than a blood hound's nose.

I do think some of that works to a degree. If it was ONLY the wind then you would not have to shower, can smoke, eat sardines or anything else on the stand as long as the deer was upwind.
i have killed many deer after 4 or 5 days of camping, hanging around the campfire and no facilities for a shower. couldn't tell you how many times i have had to put a cigarette out to shoot a deer. it IS the wind. if a deer is downwind from you, it WILL scent you. scent killer or not.

I too, have killed deer after working outside all day, going straight to the stand, the wind was in my favor,so it didnt matter.
I have also hunted as scent free as possible, had the wind shift ,and while the deer did "alert",they didnt blow and run off.
My thought is this, the wind may be "right",but your scent is blowing somewhere,so I try to limit it as much as possible.

Read the other day about the class action lawsuit against the makers of Scentloc for false advertising. Wonder how long it will be before someone brings suit against the makers ot the spray-on stuff. Course, Scent-loc made some pretty outrageous claims. Under oath, one of the executives admitted they were lies.

Scent control discipline is a lot of effort for minor improvement, but that minor improvement can make the difference when it counts.
Extremely well said. I follow a pretty over-the-top scent reduction regime, and I know it helps. Some. But you still have to be very, very careful of the wind.

For some non scientific, home research on this subject, I sprayed the sweat band in my stinky hat that I've been wearing all summer while temps have been as high as 120 heat index. I did this a week ago and there is still no detectable trace of odor even though I've been wearing the hat all week. I'm not claiming a deer couldn't smell it, I'm just claiming that, according to my nose, it went from stinky to neutral, which is a big difference.
Used with well maintained, scent free clothing this could be the difference between leaving scent on leaves as you approach the woods, or not.
Once again, if you're looking to knock a deer down at 100+ yards, this isn't near as important as when you need him to come in at 18 yards. Also, for every deer that has been shot while putting out a cigarette out, we'll never know how many evasions took place.
Another factor here is pressure. The less pressured the deer, the less you have to worry about scent control.

if the deer evaded because of the cig smell, it was downwind and would've scented me anyway. another thing, if a deer has not associated a smell with danger in the past, it may or may not spook. it may even bring it in from curiosity.
