I do think some of that works to a degree. If it was ONLY the wind then you would not have to shower, can smoke, eat sardines or anything else on the stand as long as the deer was upwind. Could you do that and still kill a deer. Yes but your likleyhood is a lot less. I always change shirts, whip myself down and spray scent killer in the early season once I get to the stand. Deer sightings went up.

Ouch! No need to do that yourself, there's always someone around here to do it for you. Unless you're talking about... Oh never mind!

Scent control discipline is a lot of effort for minor improvement, but that minor improvement can make the difference when it counts.

Scent killers will give you "some" improvement. How much?? Who knows.
Here is what has significantly increased my deer sightings.
#1. NEVER touch anything with bare skin. Don't break twigs, pick up acorns, or move branches with your bare hands. Wear gloves or cut a 3' stick with a fork on the end and use it to move stuff out of the way so it doesn't touch me.
2. Cut a trail within 50 yds of my stand. Keeps me from brushing up against branches/weeds in the dark.
3. Cut shooting lanes EARLY. Just before rain is best.
4. Get a pair of pruning shears. I use them almost every time I hunt to cut shooting lanes, trim brush to add cover to my stand and a zillion other uses. Keep em clean so you aren't transferring human scent to the ground.
5. Wear clean rubber boots. Keep them out of oil, gas, don't let the dog lay on them...etc...
6. Spray my stuff down with scent killers before a hunt.

I just get whatever kind is cheapest. You can find recipes to make it yourself if you do a little searching. My opinion is that the less you smell the better. I take a shower with scent free soap, wash my clothes with scent free detergent, and spray some scent killer on me when i'm hunting.
"Playing the wind" is a good idea, but isn't always possible, so I like the extra assurance I feel knowing that I did what I could to decrease my level of scent. Deer have personalities and moods, and will sometimes react differently to smells. Don't get discouraged if one smells you, because that is normal, and doesn't necessarily indicate that your scent control efforts are ineffective.

If you make your own, go easy on the baking soda.
Turns into sandpaper when it dries.... Don't ask me how I know this!

Agreed. I have found scent control efforts to be of particular success when hunting steep hillsides and dealing with thermals. Dealing with thermals is one of the few times that I rely on scent control.
I have a property that I hunt that is 47 acres, but only 300 yards wide. Its thick woods surrounded by pastures on 3 sides. Perhaps my favorite and most productive stand, but I only hunt it during the rut and on opening day of gun season when the deer are on the move like its the rut escaping the immense and sudden pressure. Anyway, the stand is right in the middle of the property at a creek creek crossing. There is no way to hunt this stand without compromising yourself with the wind. There is a optimal direction, but even it will put one of the game trails down wind.
In this case, I hunt high in the tree -40 feet, rely on scent control discipline and have yet to be busted. I have had does bed down directly downwind of me in this case and remain bedded down all day. I also do not hunt this stand unless it is a all day sit due to the proximity to the bedding area.
I do believe in the effectiveness of scent control efforts, but once again, I only rely on them when I absolutely have to. These products are not necessary for success, but very useful, particulalry if you are a bow hunter.
Scent control is often the subject of great debate and flame wars. I respect the dissenters opinions, but have had arguments with dissenters who base their argument on pure laziness i.e. they don't believe in scent control because they don't want to change their habits, don't want to quite smoking, don't want to have to change clothes in the field on a cold morning, etc.
These products only work as part of a cohesive plan, and part of this plan includes playing the wind.

Some company did an independant survey on them last year and the ones from Wildlife Research scored quiet well and believe it or not the Fall blend did not score as well as the unscented.
