have a friend that hunts pretty close to chaffin's barn/loveless. with all the development the past few years it's been a little slower, but about 10 years ago it was prime.

I don't think it's the development that has hurt it as much as the sheer number of folks now hunting the few deer.
10 years ago, my buddy was passing up 4.5 yr old-150" deer to give them another year and reach at least 5.5. In doing so, he managed to take a 170"er and a 190"er. There just weren't many people hunting the area back then, and most deer he passed up made it through the season (unless they got hit by a car). Now, there's so many people out there hunting the area, most of whom will shoot the first 3.5 yr old 130" buck that it's becoming quite rare to get those last couple of years of age on them to maximize their potential.
The area is certainly a pale shade of what it used to produce, regardless.
