I usually just like to read the forums and not participate in some of the more heated discussions but I have noticed something as of late that has got me wondering. I have noticed on more than one occassion some rather disparaging remarks concerning trophy hunting.

I will be the first to admit that when I go hunting, I am looking for antlers. There is not a month (possibly a week) in the year that I am not preparring for deer season one way or the other. It may be planting trees, working foodplots or clearing trails. I almost get more fun in preparring for season than I do actually hunting. But when I hunt, I go after big bucks. If someone wants to shoot small bucks, more power to them. I will shake their hand and congratulate them on a fine kill. I hunt the way I want to and expect people to hunt the way they want to.

My question is, is trophy hunting now looked down upon? Why would someone who enjoys a challenge and likes to raise the bar be looked down on? As I said earlier, I only target big bucks but I also respect someone who shoots smaller bucks. I don't care if someone wants to shoot small bucks but I also don't think people should care if someone wants to target only big bucks.

Not by me. If that's how you getting enjoyment out of hunting, go for it. I like more antlers on the bucks as well. But, I am also trying hard to fill the freezer. (I still get a thrill out of shooting a doe!)

The only thing I look down on is breaking laws and belittling other hunters who don't trophy hunt. Other than that, let's all enjoy the season!

"If someone wants to shoot small bucks, more power to them."
"I hunt the way I want to and expect people to hunt the way they want to."

I personally feel the way you do. I give a hoot what the next fella's doing. I'll hunt and kill what I want. I don't do this to impress anyone.

I think you'll get both sides, trophey vs meat, condescending each other. The reason you here more of the meat hunters putting the trophey hunters down, is because the trophey hunters are out hanging stands and scouting. lol The trophey hunters do have a lot to say about meat hunters, stick around you'll see, they just aren't here to do it.

I think you hear more from the "meat hunters" when the "Trophey Hunters" start talking about anter restrictions or reducing the number of buck tags. If you want to do QDM on your property I'm all for you doing it. If that's what you want to do. But I will disagree when you start talking about forcing everyone to do it.

I tend to look down on anybody that belittles or degrades anyone else for not doing things (hunting) the way they think it should be done... meat OR trophy hunter...within the limits of the law of course

I don't think 'trophy hunting' is necessarily looked down upon. Rather it's the attitude that several trophy hunters have

Of course there's plenty in the 'brown it's down' crowd with a bad attitude as well.

I consider myself a hardcore horn hunter and at least I don't feel like others perceive me as a low life. \:D Its amazing how when you respect other hunters right to enjoy the outdoors as they see fit (within the limits of the law) how they almost always return the favor.
