Dear Friends:
What do you believe is the whitetail deer's keenest
sense and how did you arrive at your answer?

I have observed whitetail for many years, and it
seems to me that they are "more" dependent on their
sense of smell. I have had them to see me and paw
the ground and "blow" and if I did not move too
quickly, they would stay rather calm. I have had
them to hear me break a twig or rustle through leaves
while walking and not become too alarmed. But, every
time a whitetail has winded me, he or she left dodge
like a scolded dog.

Kindly,
TennesseeWhiskey

Old saying "If you can beat a Whitetal's nose, you've won the Game"
Any of us who has hunted deer a number of years, knows this is MUCH easier said than done. You can fool their ears and most of the time fool their eyes, With wind currents, certain type of sents, being clean, and luck, you can fool their nose some of
the time.
I actually believe you can never fool their nose, just confuse
it long enough to take advantage of a certain situation.
Once they pinpoint human smell?? GAME OVER!!

If you don't move, you will fool their eyes.

Alot of things make noise in the woods, some of them make alot of noise. So their ears won't always send them running.

Deer will look at something out of the ordinary for a long time, and will calm down after a strange noise, but one smell of a predator's odor will change everything they are doing, even if they don't see it or hear it.

Of course, being their best defense can also be your best offense if you use the right scents at the right times.

A mature deer is especially "horrified" when he smells a human
in their "living room". If they are in thick enough cover, they
will often freeze and hole up like a rabbit. They seem to scence
that their movement could be dangerous to their life.

Don't forget that "6th" sense that all mature bucks seem to possess.

Da nose! Lots of things make noise and move around a little, but nuthin stinks like a human to a deer (regardless of what that human tries to do to hide or disguise his scent).
