Just the fact that folks consider bucks "small" and "big" says something....I don't know exactly what, but they are all bucks and provide meat for the table in my eyes. Now don't get me wrong, I pass on yearling bucks too with the hopes they will grow some and I firmly believe to each his own, but classifying folks as killing "small" and "big" bucks seems judgmental in itself. jmo fwiw. And I couldn't care less if someone wants to wait for a 175" buck and won't shoot nothing but, or shoots the first button he/she sees on opening day of archery season either. Oh,come on Mup,there is always an exception, but every hunter I know can make a judgement between a big buck, and a "small" buck. What are most stories about?.....The "big one"they got,or the "big one" that got away, usually, with kids being an exception.
Yea, but the point being, trophy hunting I believe, makes the point of possibly taking anything but a mature, one hundred and something inch class buck seem inferior to their standards. I like killing big bucks as much as just about anyone I'd suppose, but I hunt first and foremost for some extra meat for the table, always have and I hope always will. And some, if not most stories/pics on here are usually of a "nice" buck, which happens to be a trophy in the eyes of the successful hunter, myself included.

I don't think trophy hunting per se is looked down upon by hunters.
I think the snobbery and superior attitude that some trophy hunters have turn people against them.
Same with Fly Fishing. Its actually pretty fun, but when you get around a pompous holier than thou fly flicker, you want to give him a 6 weight enema.
As with almost anything, if you start telling people that your way is superior and anything else is stupid, bad, ignorant, etc... most people are going to dig in and fight you. Not because you are necessarily 100% wrong but because a crappy attitude makes people want to punch you in the pie hole.
The vast majority of hunters don't care what others do as long as it is legal. Kill what you want and I will congratulate you, long as it is legal.

Personally, I really don't like the term "meat hunter" because that doesn't take in the full spectrum of non-trophy hunters. The hunter I'm most interested is the average guy/gal that gets out hunting a couple of weekends per year, and doesn't have the time/inclination to be a trophy hunter. He/she just wants a chance to be successful and is thrilled with any antlered deer he/she takes. I believe this decription fits the largest single segment of hunters.

I think people type things that they dont practice - I feel that people should hunt the way they want, but not disrespect fellow hunters if it is legal.
I do think that lots of people type things like "I wouldnt" when they really would.
Do I like big bucks, YES. Do I like meat in my freezer, YES. All my kills are "trophies" - I hope all of every hunters are too.
WE as hunters are what is killing the hunting (not the non-hunters).

Sometimes we as hunters argue over what is right and what is wrong in hunting with other hunters instead of what is legal and let all hunt the way they want to.
