Maybe I should have had a part 2 to the question of how about if he was 4.5??? Personally I wouldn't shoot him even if I thought he was 10.5 years old. Granted the age is one part of the "tropyism" about a buck but I still want the best of both worlds; age and antlers. I've passed on some great looking deer in the past because of broken tines that I otherwise would have dropped in a heartbeat.

It's funny how some years I've seen alot of bucks with broken antler parts and some years I see almost none.

How do the replies here imply anyone is a trophy hunter? Please explain.

Plainly b/c most would pass this buck b/c of his antlers being broken, and imply that the buck would have scored much more if he had been fully antlered. Am I not reading into this correctly?

Depends. If I had a buck tag left to fill and it was later in the season I would give it much more thought than trying it in the early season. It would also depend on how many deer I have put in the freezer to that point also.

My first thought is "how much meat I have in the freezer" pretty much first and foremost. Just like the 7kpt that came by me 2 yrs ago on opening day rifle season. I watched him for a while and he was a "nice" buck, but after watching him for a few min, I said to myself "I ain't got any meat in the freezer yet this year!" (Remember my post about losing all my freezer meat that summer with the unplugging of the freezer incident?) Bang! ;\)

So "deer hunters" are suppose to shoot every legal deer they see. In unit l they would have to rebarrel their rifles every yr.

Nope, not at all. What I'm saying is that this buck would be a trophy hunter and a meat hunters prize, so I can only conclude that the broken antler is the only reason most would pass, or that's what it sounds like to me. I could be mistaken of course.

I stated I would pass for the single reason I do not practice shooting broken up horns period! Regardless if it is a 85" 8pt or a 150" 10pt, if the rack is broken I opt to pass. That is just how my track record has been. I do not think one can conclude from that action alone that I am strictly a "trophy hunter."

I am BOTH a meat hunter and a trophy hunter --- just like most TN deer hunters. We just tend to have different definitions regarding what constitutes a "trophy" deer.

To some, that yearling 6-pointer is a "trophy" buck. To others, it's not. To some, an old doe is a better "trophy" than a young buck. And to some degree, all of us consider every deer we kill a "trophy". Some more than others.

All the deer I kill get eaten.
But with all the opportunity to kill a doe,
I have no reason to kill a buck "just for the meat",
since most of us believe doe meat is better.
So unless it's a "trophy" buck to me, all bucks get a pass,
and none get shot just for the meat.

Mike,

For me, my answer had everything to do with the buck's age and nothing to do with his antlers. You said the buck appeared to be "2 1/2 to 3 1/2" ---- didn't matter whether there were broken tines or not ---- I had already decided not to shoot.

Anytime I think a buck MIGHT be only 2 1/2, I'm not shooting, even if I think he MIGHT be 3 1/2. I say that from a position of having done it several times, and each time, the buck turned out to be only 2 1/2, leaving me feeling something like I had just shot a B&C-class buck as a button. Similar to the feeling of shooting what you think is a HUGE doe, only to find out it was a HUGE buck that had already shed its antlers.

But if you had simply said 4 1/2, would likely have said still a shooter for me, even with some broken tines. I often misjudge age, but usually only by one year. That's why I'm LOOKING for 4 1/2 or older, so the worst "mistake" (for me) should still be (acceptable to me) as a 3 1/2.

But if a 4 1/2 is missing a whole main beam, he gets to walk by me. That same buck could come again a couple years later (and with only one antler), and I'd see him as a shooter. Age matters, antlers matter. Decision to shoot DEPENDS on circumstances.

Different strokes for different folks.

Probably b/c my personal definition of a trophy hunter is one who hunts for big perfect, or close to it, antlers on the deer. Just my way of thinking on it. I'm not calling you or anyone else "out" for anything or being one way or another, I simply made an observation in general and don't see any harm in that it wasn't deroggatory in any way toward anyone.

Honest answer... I would probably pass but not necessarily on purpose.

I would spend so much time looking at him trying to guess his age that I would miss my chance.

If he looked like a brahama bull, he would probably go down as soon as I saw how big and fat he was. No question that he was an old mature deer.

Having said that, there would be a small bit of disappointment that his rack wasn't intact unless it still had a lot of character. But I would get over it!
