I use a older Bowtech Pro40 at 70 lbs. Its a competition bow but hunts just fine.
I use 3 pins on my sight at 20,30 40. My setups are mostly thick, fairly tight and under 25 yards, though there are a couple of set ups that may get close to 30 yards. The 40 yard pin is mainly just there for the concentration of a 40 yard shot and for a quick check of being properly sighted in.

I would be remiss if I failed to point out that, as a dedicated bow hunter, I refuse to geek out over bows. While I shoot 6 days a week during the off season, the difficulty and success or failure of bow hunting is more often that not, determined by factors not directly related to the craft of shooting a bow or the piece of equipment itself.
I'm not preaching, just want to make sure it is expressed that I believe in a work ethic/motivation hunting philosophy. While I like my bow and enjoy shooting it and pay close attention to its state and my technique, the 11 year old girl at the archery range can probably smoke me in actual shooting.
Hunting: Its much more than just hunting.

It's a Hoyt and has "fast flite" on one limb. All I know is it's heavy, difficult to hold back for a long time, but generally perfoms well when I do everything right. I can't afford a newer bow, or even a new target...lol, but i'm still thankful to have a capable weapon.

I am shooting an Athens Archery Exceed. It is a SMOKER. My cousin is a dealer for them over in Asheville, NC. He talked me into trying it and I love it. On 70lbs,31 inch draw, it shot a little over 347 fps with a 360gr arrow. Once we put the peep in and finished tuning it, it still shot north of 330fps. Incredible draw, lots of let off, solid back wall and it shoot like a dream. I had a Bowtech Commander before this one and there is no comparison. Athens is a fairly new company, but they make a great bow.

I am sure somebody has commented on the new HOYT over the last 8 pages of commentary but dang, I picked up one of the new HOYTS that weigh about 3 pounds plus and was really amazed.
Also most amazing was the price tag.
I will keep my Katera for now simply because had I only recognized the visionary leadership of that young, upstart Senator and Marxist community organizer from the state of Illinois I would feel better about spending money than saving it.

Replacing my '94 PSE Polaris. Just got in my brand new PSE Brute Whitetail Madness today. Added on my PSE Top Gun F18 sights, stabilizer and stopped in BPS in Orlando this morning to kick off the Fall Hunting Classic at 09:10 to pick up a new whisker and a kwikee. Sighting and tuning tomorrow morning. 10, 20, 30 for TN, 40, 50 and 60 for IA. Also picked up a WGN Halo rangefinder. Pretty nice for $80.

BSK, all jokes aside, your truly missing out on some of the most exciting deer hunting known to man! There is nothing better than having to wait until a deer is literally right under you, getting drawn back without detection, waiting for the perfect shot, and putting an arrow precisely thru the boiler room. Watching as it runs away and waiting for his legs to buckle and fall over within sight/hearing, theres just nothing like it!!! Following a good arrow shot deer's blood trail, when necessary, is like a kid following the candy to an easter basket! I could go on and on, get your bow back out BSK, knowing how much you love deer hunting and how much you know about them, its a crime for you not to bowhunt!!!

Winchester,
I used to be a hard-core bow-hunter. I hunted every weekend of bow season from 1980 to 1992.
However, I finally realized I wasn't enjoying myself, and it was more just "going through the motions" as an excuse to be in the woods.

We were placing too much pressure on the deer at the time we were carrying the lowest odds weapon. Due to lack of predictable travel patterns, we RARELY get more than one encounter with a particular older buck. When we bow hunted, we were having those "once-per-season" encounters during bow season, with the buck out of bow range. By the time MZ and gun rolled around the bucks had reacted to our hunting pressure by going nocturnal.
Since we quite bow-hunting our success rate on older to mature bucks has gone WAY up. We now enjoy our hunting much more and the increased success rate on older bucks is one of the primary reasons we enjoy our hunting more.
Although I'll be the first to admit, I learned more about deer behavior while bow-hunting than at all other times of the year combined.

We were placing too much pressure on the deer at the time we were carrying the lowest odds weapon. . . . . . . . By the time MZ and gun rolled around the bucks had reacted to our hunting pressure by going nocturnal. I totally agree with you about the pressure reducing future opportunity when you're carrying an more effective weapon.
However, I think that you would have still found your opportunities to take those older bucks (now) greatly increased EVEN IF you had continued bowhunting your property.
Although I'll be the first to admit, I learned more about deer behavior while bow-hunting than at all other times of the year combined. I have a different take on this. It's not so much the fact that you were "bowhunting" as it was you were forced (by the short-range weapon) into doing more "observation" than shooting. Thus, you learn so much more than by simply shooting the first deer seen.
Same thing happens when you voluntarily begin doing more observing than shooting during the gun seasons. In fact, I've had much more meaningful deer movement to observe during the November muzzleloader segment than in the October archery segment. Amazing things can happen when you change your "mindset".

I understand BSK, if you only hunt one place (one tract of land) all season, and several people are hunting, you would have to be super careful (almost impossible) to bow hunt it and not let the deer know they are being hunted. I too have a few places I dont hunt until gun season rolls around, however this is because they arent conducive to bow hunting ( thick and few good trees). Anytime I can, I try to kill my best bucks with a bow, but once they know they are being hunted the gig is up for a while, as they will go underground on you quick! I will also agree that bow hunting will, and has for me, teach you more about deer than anything else you can do. Dealing with them where you simply observe their habits instead of leveling the crosshairs at 50 yards and pulling the trigger, will reveal to you so much you never knew existed!

Yup, at realistic frequencies. However, if we up our standards too high we would no longer be killing bucks at a frequency we would enjoy. It's all a balancing act--frequency of success versus quality (size) of success.
Each person will find a different point at which the balance point is "right." In addition, a person's balance point will probably change with age and experience.
I can say with absolute certainty that as I age, my balance point is slide back down the scale instead of farther up the scale. I no longer need to prove anything to anyone, including myself. I've accomplished every goal I ever had, and now I'm more interested in hunting "for fun" instead of accomplishment in harvest.

No, it was a night and day difference the very first year we tried not bowhunting. It made a HUGE difference, so big we rapidly agreed there would be no more bow-hunting on the property.

Absolutely true. We became "observers" instead of hunters.

A good friend of mine has a LH Matthews Reezen. He let me shoot it a few times last year at camp. It was awesome! Very quick and almost vibration free. I'd love to have one of those but I'm keeping this bow for awhile longer.
