Best advice I can give someone who really wants to elk hunt. While you are still young and in shape, go borrow the money and book a hunt with a first class guide. I'd be happy to suggest a couple. You can pay the loan off in a couple years but the memories last a lifetime.

...and forget everything you know about deer hunting.
I guess that's the part that gets me the most. And I'm sure that is why at least one good guided hunt would help with mulies or elk.
I can see spending the first few trips just running around in circles trying to figure out exactly what to do.
