Ok guys need some help hear.. Im a Michigan boy and moved back to TN last year.. I only got in a few hunts last year when I moved back home to TN. I leaved in MI most of my life. So the heat is something different for me... What if you get a bad shot on a deer with a bow.. Up north is would be no prob coming back the next morning and given the deer enough time to pass on.. But down hear wont the heat spoil the meat, if you wait that long.. What do you all do, any help would be great.. I Process all my own deer, and up north I would leave them hang for a day in the garage before I would start working on them.. Down hear I guess you would have to get right on it. Like gut it, and bring it home and start processing it, am I right.. anybody have any advice on my questions. Thanks all.

I don't know if it's the right thing to do, but I would give it some time because what looks like a bad shot might be fatal if certain blood vessels are cut; also arrowheads might cause more damage after the shot if they remain in the deer.

After a reasonable amount of time I would get down and track. If I had reason to think that I had only hit one lung, or saw that the deer was stopping intermittently to bed down, then I would try to pursue and pressure the deer if I were well within the borders of my property.

The heat is hard on a fresh kill for sure...You can quarter the meat out and leave it on ice in a cooler for several days with no problems...I like to put the meat in plastic garbage bags to keep it dry from the melting ice...leave the drain plug off and the water won't pool...

What tndrbstr said. Only thing I do is start the trail as quickly as I can get down. Last thing I want is for a poorly hit deer to lie down.

That can be a problem. I have shot deer in the early season and watched them fall. By the time I got them to the processor they were spoiled.

must have took a while to get there?even in 85 degree weather you have about a 4-5 hour window from shot to gut to cooling down

It was in the mid 90's that day and it was a VERY long drag by myself. Probably did take 4-5 hours from the time it died to the time it got put in the freezer.

If its hot I will always have an empty cooler with a couple of gallon jugs of ice in it in my vehicle...If I kill one I will have one out of the hide and off of the bone and on ice within 30 minutes of reaching the truck...save the head and call it a day!... \:\) I ain't taking no chances....

Some things that may help in hot weather............

1) Don't hunt as late into the morning as you would later in the year. That gives you a little extra time with lower temps to find the deer and get it out.

2) Don't hunt until dark in the evening. I know hard to do....but if you aren't up to tracking in the dark, stop hunting before last light to make finding the deer faster.

3) Clean and gut that sucker ASAP! Split the chest open way up high (and clean EVERYTHING internal out of there!) and split the pelvis and lay it open too.

4) If you don't quarter it and put it on ice like stated above......Stop at the FIRST little market you find leaving the woods. Buy a bag of ice or two (or do like tndrbstr does and carry frozen gallon jugs with you) and shove it as far up into the cavity as possible and put one lower down in the stomach cavity and between the legs. Wrap duct tape around it to hold them in place if you need to.

5) If it's daytime and not early evening when the sun is about gone, try to haul it out of the sunlight if possible. Maybe cover it or wrap it in a white sheet that will help reflect sun if it's in the open bed of a truck.

6) If you can't get it straight to a processor or do it yourself right then.....go ahead and quarter it at home and put it on ice or you can put it in the freezer until later. Some on here have stated they quarter there's out and put them in the freezer until they actually have several. Then they thaw them out and process several at one time to make the job a little easier than doing each one separate every time.

Just some things that help and you can pick wehich ones will work for you.

As far as tracking goes, a lot depends on your skills.

I started carrying a backpack, unscented contractor garbage bags, and a gambrel with rope in my truck.

If I kill a deer way back, or during a hot day, I tote my stand to the truck and get the back pack. Go back in and hang/process my deer. Retain some proof of sex and pack the whole shebang out.

The deer meat goes into a cooler at the truck with a couple ice bottles until I can get to a store and pack the cooler with ice.

Once I am home, I will take the meat out of the bags and hose any dirt/hair/leaves off and then pack the clean meat in a cooler full of ice with the drain plug open for a couple days adding ice as necessary.

My venison is always clean and tastes great.

That's why I never bow hunt until about mid October when it cools off a little.
