Because you are afraid that there might be a buck near by. I will admit, I have been guilty several times. Especially if there is a certain buck that I am after.

Thats why I wait till the end of dec and jan to stock my freezers with does. I like to leave as little evidence of me being there as possible. If I want some straps or meat early I'll go to a "doe hole" where i know that there's no big buck I am interested in killing or a poor spot that just doesn't hold mature bucks...

If im gonna shoot a doe, i decide before i even get into the stand.
I never shoot does between late Oct thru end of Nov. though for obvious reasons.

I rarely shoot a doe with anything other than a bow, in early season.
During the rut, I will not shoot one, period.
A few years ago, I took my best bow buck after 12 does had walked right under me. I had several great shots at nice mature does, but simply decided to wait. Five minutes or so after the does came out, this buck came out and gave me a 15 yard broadside shot......it was during the last part of the first bow season.
glad I waited.

I try to take a doe in early bow season for meat. I prefer not to be fooling with killing does during November, but concentrate on taking a good buck.
