I try to take a couple does during the early bow season...During ML and later I'll still take one if need be, but I'll let her lay till I'm ready to come down. I've never had a buck approach a dead doe, but have kill'd a few not long after putting one down.

There aren't that many does around my place anyway, so, even tho I want to kill'em, I usually just let'em walk in hopes of them bringing in some bucks. Now further on out(about 10-12 mi) there's a property that is covered up with'em, and I usually put in my order from a buddy if I need an extra for the freezer. ;\)

Being from unit b..for most of my hunting career the only time to take does were in archery and one 3 day weekend in muzzleloader. I always killed my does with a bow cause if I killed a doe on muzzleloader i was done. It's changed now and I may take a doe w/ blackpowder. I tend to see more bucks out and about in blackpowder season so I wait till last day to take a doe if I decide to do so.

However if I have a stand I am hunting a particular buck I won't shoot anything out of that stand but him or another good buck. I have my mind made before I get in the woods whether or not I will shoot a doe if given the opportunity.

Between late Oct and Early Dec. I will not shoot them. I will however shoot them in early bow, for meat and then after First week in Dec. it's on!

When it comes to gun season, I always wondered about how a gun
blast affects a mature deer that might be close by. Let's say
you kill the doe with a rifle or muzzle loader and there is a
mature buck hanging off the side off a ridge scent checking for
does. Does he write off that sound or has he been educated in
the past as to what's up.

I have my guesses, but I have no way to back them up as proof.

I dont shoot does in November (for the most part)! I shoot as many does I can during bow season. Then I start shooting them again in Dec and Jan.

I admit that I dont like to shoot does during November. I dont want to take a chance of a buck being in the hollow below me or the next ridge over making his way towards me. I take NO chances when it comes to me and a mature buck. I believe they are too smart for that. Why would he walk my way (if he's within 200 yards) after a loud gun shot?.....I wouldnt. I can kill all the does I want in the other 2 1/2 months. For me, November is a "buck month". You never know what you will be missing right after a shot.

I will say though, that I have shot a doe, and less than 10 minutes late, had a 3 1/2 yo bucks pushing the doe I shot down the hill VERY aggessively. But every circumstance is different.

I am thinking about shooting a hot doe (if its early in the morning) to act as a live decoy....to bring them in \:\) . It's worked for me before. It just has to happen at the right time and early that given morning.
