I get my does early and off of public land...when it starts to get "right" I move to private land or my honey holes and 95% of the time does get the pass.

Rut timing doesn't change my doe killing. If I want to kill a doe, I'll kill one--peak of the rut or not.

I try and shoot a doe during early bow season. From late October all through November, I am looking for antlers. After that I start pounding the does.

The best buck bait I ever saw was a dead doe laying in front of me. I'll try to head shoot one every time I can.

I'm MUCH more afraid of shooting a young buck hurting my chances at the big buck than ever shooting a doe. I've had countless mature bucks come in shortly after passing up a young buck. Hardly ever have a mature buck come in shortly after a doe that wasn't in heat.

Now if the doe is obviously in heat, I won't shoot her, and I'll leave her out front as bait.

I shot this buck while he was sniffing a dead does butt. I had shot her about three minutes earlier.

I bow killed a hot doe one year that had a small buck trailing her...he would bed with her for a while then he would get restless and try to get her back up by poking her with his antlers..then he would bed beside of her again, then try to get her back up again. He would smell her wound then smell her tail..He stuck around for a couple of hour..another hunter even came thru and ran it off but the buck still came back about twenty minutes later....

In a long-term project in which we were shooting a lot of does, hunters had to record very detailed deer sighting information, including the actual time each deer was seen. I began comparing hunter observation data from time hunted after a doe was killed versus time hunted before a doe was killed as well as days where no does were killed. Surprisingly, older bucks sighting rates were higher after a doe was killed compared to before a doe was killed or days where no doe was killed.

I'm a firm believer that a dead doe is good "bait" for older bucks.

Interesting..

I'll kill the first good doe I see during bow season. As the ML season comes into full swing. I usually let them walk.
