I hunt what ever distance it takes. And sometimes you'll be suprised at how far you don't have to walk to be successful. If I can use an atv to get me in deeper then I'll do so and if I have to walk in then so be it. It's never been a problem for me to walk. If I can get an atv to a downed deer to get it out, then that's great, and if I can't, I've got an external fram pack that that has hauled them out on my back.

I have no limit to walking. I have walked almost a mile at eagle creek many times. I prefer it no longer than that but i am willing to go "where" i have to. the down side to long walks of course is breaking out in a massive sweat! I hate this most of all during bow season because the humidity is soo high that you stink up the entire area!

If I know that there is a high probability of success of killing a good buck I am pegged on, I will travel however long it takes for me to get there. On our property, I will travel anywhere from 100 yards to about 1.3 miles.
Whenever we go to LBL, I have traveled ALOT farther than that to get where I want to be.
Like others have mentioned. I sweat so easy! I have to take my time or else, it will be a cold, damp morning.
I am considering buying a mountain bike. It would cut down on time, scent on the ground, noise (atleast sounding like a human), and energy (for most places).

I hear you on the Mountain Bike. I haven't owned one in years, but I borrowed one once to access a stretch of Corps of Engineers Land only accessible by adjacent landowners and definitely not hunter friendly.
Much of the public land I hunt does not allow mtn bikes, at least off of designated trails, but it sure would make approaches quick and stealthy.

Not too far, because if you look at the right places, you don't have to. Some of them are right under a hunters nose or near human activity. Unlikely places with cover (and it doesn't have to be alot of cover) can produce BIG TIME.

Definately! In some places, for walks more than 30 minutes, I could get there in less than 10 minutes. Our cabin is on one of the highest points on our property. So basically, I could just "glide" down the ridges to where I need to get off and walk. On the way back, I dont care about sweating...because I'm usually coming back to watch football, eat, and I can take another shower for the evening hunt. Just something I've considered and really might buy into it.

I try not to hunt any futher in than I would want to drag out.
One year I fell out of my tree stand. That year I hunted only as far as I could walk because I figured if I could walk that distance in, I could walk it out. Good thing I didn't kill that year or I would never have been able to drag it out. LOL

Since I hunt private land and stay out of the farmer's fields (ride the edges) I rarely have to walk very far or drag a deer very far. Most people around here have no problem with wheelers as long as you don't damage their crops. I would say that the furthest that I walk going in or out is about 500 yards. Normally, when I killa deer, i can drive the wheeler right up to him .
If I am acroos BIG MUDDY, I have to drag him to the creek, load him in the boat, paddle to the other side, drag him out of the boat and on to the wheeler and come out. I have had help more than once getting deer out .
I don't necessarily think that distance from access makes for better hunting .....unless you are allergic to other hunters...lol.

like getting off the beaten path. As long as you can scout a good area in the deep woods it can be rewarding. I have spent many mornings geared up for a 3+ mile hike in through knee deep snow in VT looking for a big mature buck.
