A couple of promising recent developments that are at least planting seeds to help spout more interest in hunting:
1) The archery in schools programs.
2) The competitive shooting programs.
Amen to that! Both of those programs are going gangbusters!!!!
Once they have become so accustomed to using the equipment and have enjoyed it for so long, it should only be natural that as they age and start doing more independent thinking, they will at least consider more options (hunting) that will allow them to have greater enjoyment of their hobby/sport.

I think its a combination.
1. Television. It has become the great babysitter. No need for imagination and play anymore, just turn on the box sit and drool. It warps reality and takes away our passion. Why go outside and play when you can sit in air conditioned comfort and watch others go outside and play?
2. Parents. We have bought into the "modern society" ideal of what our lives should be like. Forget what you enjoy. If you don't have a certain status/house/car then you aren't "successful". Parents used to parent kids, now they are supposed to be a tv star role model, taxi driver, and 24 hour entertainment provider. Most parents are exhausted trying to pay the bills an maintain the TV show lifestyle. Taking the kids hunting/camping/fishing is just one more burden. What ever happened to parents saying "Turn off the TV and go outside to play ! "
3. Modern hunter mentality. Today there is so much emphasis on trophy hunting and hunting as an industry that the whole purpose of hunting has been clouded. Gotta get a big buck is what hunting seems to have devolved into. Kids follow what they are shown and taught. Tv shows sell Trophy hunting, we as hunters emphasize Success= big bucks to the exclusion of all the other less marketable attributes of hunting. What about just having fun in the outdoors while hunting? Can't package and sell a sunrise so that aspect gets neglected. Nobody is packaging and selling "great memories with dad" at the local store.

Many factors i believe most of which are mentioned here. Certainly the price of hunting is going up and available, readily available opportunities ease of land use and just those who can "take" them certainly play into the equation......

I wonder if there is a desire or need to hunt gene? When I was 6 or 7 years old, I can remember seeing rabbits and other game that amazed me at their elusiveness. After I ate some fried rabbit that my uncle had killed, I wanted to get some too. I got my first BB gun when I was about 9 years old, and I started trying to hunt rabbits with it (ha). Not because I was hungry, but because I liked the challenge, fascination, and felt the need to pursue them.
By the way, there was virtually no deer in Maury County in 1958.

Absolutely. Hunting is unquestionably an hereditary/instinctive desire in predators (including humans), and those who have it the strongest survive longest and produce more offspring with this trait. That's Natural Selection in action. We humans haven't come far from subsistence hunting (just a few generations).

The habits of a modern kid bares little resemblence to the kids of the 70's. This generation has instant gratification in the forms of internet, TV, Games and text messaging. 30-40 years ago we had to use our imaginations, get out and hunt something to occupy our time. Shooting a real firearm was a big adventure to us. These kids can plug in a PS2 and shoot and fight all day and never leave the living room.

my great nephew is 11. he told me that he wants to start hunting soon. I will be taking him.
Now, he has a pellet gun and practices alot. he wants to start killin' stuff.......
I'm abit hesitant on giving him a shotgun without first exposing him to maybe a 22 rifle first......maybe move him up slowly.
I have a .410 that I will give him , for his first shotgun....
I told him that we may go squirrel hunting some this season to get him started and if he wants, I'll take him deer hunting (together in a blind) this season and let him simply observe and get to know what it's all about.
I'm not going to throw him out there simply because I don't want to take the time to "ease" him in to it.....I believe kids should be eased in to hunting with absolutely no pressure to succeed......Kids like to win, but when they don't it's best to not make winning a priority..IMO.
I like the fact that he approached me about going....

I think it's reltively simple. Take them outdoors when they're young. Don't overdo it with them early. Be consistent taking them outdoors and make sure it's a positive experience for them and the will grow to love it. The mistakes we make are waiting until they are too old to begin taking them or to expect them to have the stamina and the patience of an adult when we do start taking them.
