We've all been busted by deer before, right?

You think that you've done everything right. You've positioned your stand downwind of "most' of the deer activity. Just as things seem to be heating up, a deer busts you . You didn't see that coming...lol.

Now, what do you do...?

Do you change your setup....move your stand?

let's say that you are hunting a small farm and there are not that many deer using it. Once they bust you, they seem to shy away from your exact location. Getting a bow shot is pretty much impossible now. Maybe you are hunting a big farm or a huge stretch of timber and you know that the deer that busted you are not the only deer around and they may not even come back through again anyway..?

maybe you think that the deer will "forget" about busting you and maybe even come back that same day...maybe not?

Do you stay put and hope for the best or do you get down and move? Do you just go hunt another stand and hope the area that you got busted in "cools down"..and then go back to it ..?

the guys on Chaney often make sport of the way I move stands around during the season......seems to work for me and I don't mind the extra work....I rarely sit in a stand if I get busted in it.....especially if I get "seen". I will move a stand anywhere from 50- 100 yards to completely out of the area, if need be.

Some guys tell me that is too much work....

Again, it seems to work for me.....lol.

Any thoughts....?

I enjoy moving around.Even if its only a few hundred yards. The first time in a new tree usually is the best time to arrow that big one.

It irritates me if they see and smell me, but that doesn't happen too much. I think deer are sometimes just really cautious, and may not really have a mental concept of what they are sensing. I'm sure "blowing" or "snorting" is a fairly common behavior, and not one just reserved for human detection.

I've hunted many times only to have the same the same hyper- sensitive older doe show up and raise hell; but she kept coming back because the food was there, and she couldn't really conceptualize what she was disturbed about.

On the other hand, if i'm hunting a particular buck, and he sees and smells me, then I will more than likely move my stand.

If I am hunting in an area with few deer I will probably move my stand or just not hunt it for several days. If there is a large population of deer in the area or I am on a good funnel I will probably continue business as usual. I don't think that the deer I spooked will spread the word but they may be more cautious the next few times they move through the area.

My BIL moves his stand so much I wonder if he is ever going to hunt.
However he kills some nice ones every year
If the deer are feeding up the ridge on smaller oaks ,
He moves.

I am just the opposite I feel that I have done my homework and the deer will come sooner or later
But I never hunt the same stand more than two days in a row.

But will you go back to that same stand soon after that, will you leave it alone for a while or will you move it...?

I have watched deer use an area on a daily basis until they catch my wind and then I may not see any for a week or so...

I'm not sitting for a week where my confidence is low....so I move.

thoughts?

Not in less I have noticed that buck movement has decreased . Being seen is less of a distractment to me that of being detected by smell .But will move in a heartbeat if need be , I don't beat a dead horse !!!

I think you hurt more my depositing scent on another tree because you undoubtedly left scent on the one you just left. To me you are cutting your chances by moving during a hunt. As far as scent is concerned, you might as well be hunting out of two trees.

Now, can you use this to your advantage? sure. If the wind happened to shift, making one stand location unfavorable, you could rely on the scent you already deposited to possibly push deer to your new location.

One deer is not all deer. If a deer busts you, it's not like they are going to run off and tell their friends, and even if one deer avoids your tree, I don't think one deer's actions necessarily dictates another's.

I would stay and wait it out.

The deer may walk off and wonder what that was and not ever get confirmation that it was a hunter (by me not leaving) and just have to come back in and check things out.

However I've been real close to one and he gets up and bolts.
Think He knew what I was, what I was doing there, and did not want a dirt nap

I usually stay put, but it just depends on the situation. If the big-un comes by and busts me the glass can suddenly become half empty. Deep depression, lots of sobbing!! LOL
In my past experience, getting down and moving can sometimes create another opportunity, but most of the time I think it cuts your chances and increases your odds of getting busted again.

When you've got up over 40 stands, that provides a lot of places to hunt!

I would stay put for that morning or evening whichever it might be. Every time Ive ever gotten down and moved whether it be because I got busted or just lost confidence in the spot it has always felt like a mistake hindsight.

I rarely hunt the same stand twice a day, or month as far as that goes so moving is what Id be doing anyway.

I hate it, but I sit there until its either lunch time or dark. Moving around in the woods when the timing isnt right, can do FAR much harm than good. Still hunting is fine, but only when the time is right (before a storm, right after a rain, or windy conditions, etc...) I dont want to be stomping around in the leaves on top of a ridge unless I'm going in or coming out. I cant tell you how many times I have been blown at and seen deer several minutes later. There is no need to leave the area. Deer blow all the time for many various reasons.

I had a doe last year that stood under my stand for 45 minutes on the morning of November 13th snorting and stomping - nonstop. I dont normally shoot does in November and didnt want to shoot her at all. But dadgum....she made me mad. I put her down with my muzzleloader. Less than 5 minutes later, I had an 8 pt chase 9 does right under my stand. He was a nice 2 1/2 but I wanted to give him another year. They paid NO attention to the dead deer there and obviously the "snorting" didnt effect them. They hung around for over 20 minutes.

These situations have happened over and over in years past.

No, not lucky. I just made massive sacrifices to acquire it. No luck involved. It's called a lifetime of hard work.

And the same scenery. That's part of why I hunt different stands every time. By changing my scenery, I never get bored.

You are right BSK, luck often has nothing to with it...I guess that I have always been VERY fortunate....I have always had more land that I could hunt in any given season...from one end of the state to the other...and to be honest,...I could never give anyone any money to allow for the privilage...But a life time effort was far from what I ever had had to invest...I reckon I have been very fortunate indeed.....

I usually have 6 to 8 stands out on a 100 acre farm. Four of them are "traditional" sites that have been there for years, and have provided many kills...one stand got three kills in 6 days, and 8 kills over two seasons.

Each year I try one or two new locations, and I use climbers and still hunts during rifle season to get more variety.

My point is, if you stay clean, watch your wind, and keep quiet, you can minimize negative effects of being busted. However, the really big bucks may only give you one opportunity.

I have many places to hunt either by ladder or as in most cases by portable and i never have to fret over location....unless it is caused by wind issues. I have many which favor a sw, w or nw to n wind.....when the wind comes out of the east to se etc then i have issues because we have very poor access to those kind of stands and those latter wind directions usually indicate poor weather and poorer still deer movement....not always but a large percentage of the time

I'll usually back out, hunt it later in the season. That's one of the biggest error's I believe we make is over hunting a stand. If deer are going around you, then that's a good sign that you have been patterned. Time to maybe move midday.

I'd stay put for that hunt, then probably move to another spot, which is pretty much what I would do anyway (even if a deer hadn't busted me... that I knew about).

Depends on the deer that "busted" me and the type area that I'm
hunting. If your busted by a mature buck in fairly open woods,
you might give up that area and move to a area that the older
deer feel more comfortable in. Even if they know you might be
around.

Being that I do not bow hunt any more and I have not been in a stand in years it really would not bother me but If I did still stand hunt I would stay put for that hunt any way. Depending I guess on the locaton and situation and what deer busted me. Unless he was the only good deer on the place I would just sit it out in hopes that another one would maybe come cruising threw. The next time in I may move but just depends on how and what busted me .
