winter peas with some old fashion pinto beans mixed in....should be illegal to hunt over it... The winter peas are the sweetest plant i have ever tasted.. except maybe sugar cane...

Winter rye is the hardiest plant out there. It is an excellent soil builder as well. This is not ryegrass but grain rye. It is the most cold tolerant and will grow better in poorer soils than wheat, oats or clovers. After a couple of seasons of lime and fertilizer and winter rye plowed under as green manure, clover, oats or wheat can be planted with much more success.
When I start a new plot, I take a soil test for cool season pasture and follow the reccomendations of the test closely. I always start with rye and the deer readily use it until mid-spring. The second year I'll plant a rye/clover blend. Sometimes I'll plant that same blend again for the third year if the ph level remains under 6%.
My best plots have been mixtures of wheat, rye, and oats mixed with blends of crimson/white/and red clovers. The rye should be planted on the poorest soils in the plot and the oatss on the best parts of the plot with the clovers spread evenly throughout.
Also, a mix of winter greens such as rape, kale, and turnips in part of the plot is great. I believe that providing a salad bar for the deer is better than depending one one or two things.
