MUP, Not exactly sure what you're saying, but my thoughts are if it's a high-probability shot, we take them. If not, just be happy to have had the experience.
Pretty much just saying that I've waited a couple times for the "perfect" shot, when I should have taken the "high probablity" shot being before me.

If you know your rifle/ml like you should, then theres really no such thing as a deer not giving you a shot...if he's in the open. It cracks me up to watch tv shows and the hosts are constantly talking about "knowing your weapon", "practice, practice, practice", or "become confident with your rifle and know exactly where your bullet is going". Next thing you know, there talkin about such and such buck did'nt give them a shot. Bull crap, if you know your weapon as good as they preach about, then you should be able to confidently place a bullet wherever you need to. Its only a marginal/low probability shot if you are a marginal/low probability shooter. Only one instance I can think of and that is a straight goin away with head down and you are gound level. Quartering away, quartering too, straight on, straight away (from an elevated position), it don't matter. Know your gun!

I don't care how well I know my weapon, I'm not shooting at a deer moving along at a good clip. Nothing faster than a steady walk.

I'll take a killing shot if I'm comfortable with it running or walking. For some strange reason I've had more opportunities at running shots with a muzzleloader in my hands and on each occassion a deer has come home with me.
The point I'm making on my earlier post was that a hunter needs to be prepared for the unexpected. Granted after hours and days on stand that edge may dull somewhat but none-the-less, they should stay as alert and as expectant as possible to any scenario that may present a killing shot. This way when that split second arrives you'll already have your rifle shouldered and be squeezing the trigger instead of kicking yourself later saying I should have taken that shot.

I don't care how well I know my weapon, I'm not shooting at a deer moving along at a good clip. Nothing faster than a steady walk. The better you know the limitations of both yourself and your weapon, factors acquired by study, experience, and practice, the more likely some shots for you might be "high probability" while those same shots might be "low probability" for someone else, particularly someone else shooting a 30/30 with open sights vs. your shooting a more accurate gun with optical sights. But that said, the man behind the gun usually matters much more than whatever the gun.
Many of the deer I've killed have been running fast, but at close range. Even a fast walking deer at 100 yards is usually not a problem (with my usual set-up). But get a mature buck "herding" a doe even "out in the open", and that high-probability shot may or may not present. Or how about "jumping" a deer and trying to get a high-probability shot? Just depends on the circumstances. Sometimes the high-odds shot presents, sometimes it doesn't, and I just look forward to tomorrow, either way.

being able to confidenlty pull off the killing shot....that seems to be what determines the choice to pull the trigger or not for many folks....OK,.....but what if its not a one shot deal?...what if the only available option on the big buck is to break down the animal to allow for the second shot to dispatch it (say a spine shot some where between the shoulders and the tail)? ...who would choose not to take that route?...

I've killed more "hidden" deer with an intentional spine shot than any other shot I could have taken. A spine shot on the foward half of the body is a killing shot. You will need a finishing shot if you take the back half of the body shot.
