I found out in the buck in a fence thread that I was pathetic and unethical. SHOCKER, LOL
Interested to see how I measure up on this one.
A P&Y and a B&C class buck are horn locked, you have a weapon of choice in your hand, season is wide open. What would you do?

This happened at Oak Ridge last year. I THINK after he contacted the proper officials they let him take both.

I know me. I'd shoot a few pics and then try to cut them lose. A few more scars can't hurt.

If they weren't actually moving around fighting, but were laying on the ground exhausted I would probably just call TWRA and ask for advice or assistance.

my buddy shot a 181" 16pt at LBL as it was dragging a dead 142" 9pt thru the woods. I'd say that was definitely a mercy killing. Game warden let him keep both deer after taking bunches of pics and calling all his buddies. This was about 10 years ago.

In most instances where the outcome was known, locked bucks physically separated by Man, or released by removing the antlers, were so physically stressed by the entire process that they died later.

Whats cheap about hunting 13 weekends 12 with a bow. Most were 3 and 4 day weekends, normally one week straight. Around 45 days in a stand, Id say a fair average of 10 hours a day in the weather. Doubt I hunted a time that I didnt walk a mile to my stand up hill both ways LOL. Sleeping in my truck many nights if I sleep at all. Did I mention its a 4 hour drive to where I hunt each way?
I look at it as an opportunity. Would you shoot a B&C buck with 3 legs or blind how about one that was jumped up out of a corn field by a combine. Right place right time thats all, no differet in my mind. Yeah the buck would have an * beside it but, it would most certainly get shot.
Ill add, I rely on mature buck to slip up when he does Im gonna be there and take full advantage of it.

Take pictures and leave them alone. Your chances of getting injured trying to "help" are high. Really? So if a B&C,and a P&Y come up from behind you, start fighting, and get locked up,your gonna take pics?,I would too,a little later.

If they aren't locked up yet, I'm shooting. But if I walk up on locked up bucks, why would I kill one? Where is the sportmanship? Where is the pursuit of game in a fair manner?
A buck killed that way would mean nothing to me, no matter how big he was.
Again, I guess I've been doing this too long and already accomplished too many goals. I'm way beyond wanting a trophy buck so badly I would do anything to get one. I'm at the point in my life and my hunting career that how I kill a buck is more important than the buck's "stats." I know some find this hard to believe, but that's just the way it is.
Don't get me wrong; I would be thrilled to kill a record-book buck. But only on my terms. Anything less would be devoid of meaning.

Depends on the nature of the bucks. if one looked injured thats the one I'd shoot.I almost went to jail trying to do the right thing once. Ever since I'll let the law offcials sort it out.

Most on this site would do this also if the opportunity presented itself . Those who have harvested a book buck may not but let's be honest .... a book buck , come on .

They would probably never get the chance to get locked up. I would have killed one of them before that happened.
But if they somehow did lock up before I could get the shot, then they have a free pass.
