I have fallen out of my stand twice...I guess you could call it fell...I lost my balance for one reason or another and just ended up jumping to the ground....I rarely ever go over 12 to 16 feet tho....
Now that I wear one, I keep my vest/harness short enough that I can just barely set down on my seat...I don't want to go far enough to impale myself on a tree step and be hangin there....

Ive had 1 close call since I stared hunting from a Summit. I was 30 ft up and getting ready to come down and lowered the hand climber down close to the platform. I bent over to get my feet in the stirrups and the hand climber shifted. That was 2 years ago and I still get butterflies in my stomach when I think about it.

Wish they still made the belts. Those were much less bulky & inconvenient and would keep you from hitting the ground.

I had something like that happen last year.. tried to stand up from sitting in my climber, and they top peice of the stand rolled when I put pressure down on one side of it!.. Freaked me out and I'm scared of heights when in the tree. "

If I'm on top of the house or anything like that it doesn't bother me.

Before safety belts and harness made their appearance on the market, I had older-style climbing stands fall out from under me multiple times. I followed the stand down the tree on three of those occassions, receiving injuries all three times.

Climbing stand technology is much better now, but I don't use them anymore (really hate having to climb a tree with those things).

I've had to jump from falling ladder stands several times while puting them up or taking them down. No close calls while actually hunting from them though.

If you were a single man, I would say "have at it. If you want to take the risk, I'll come to the funeral." But since you have a wife and children that depend on you, I would say that it is a selfish attitude. Just remember, you have a responsibility to people other than yourself.

Just don't want to see you get hurt if it could have been prevented Bryan. I know my words probably fall on deaf ears, but it's something to think about. ;\)

I fully understand your opinion Quailman. But where does "safety" end? If I were being completely responsible to my family, I wouldn't have the job I do. I've nearly been killed several times. Is someone that works as a lineman being irresponsible to his/her family, as that is an incredibly dangerous job. What about a policeman or a fireman?

Life is full of risks. I take the approriate safety measures for the most likely life-threatening events. But you have to draw the line somewhere.

For me, it's more dangerous hanging Christmas lights or cleaning out the gutters, but I do it without any safety device. Just have to be careful.

I'll give you credit for being stubborn, but I do understand your point. \:\) However , I will counter by saying if I can use preventative measures to minimize risk, then I will because people depend on me. Plus, I don't want to end up drinking my vegetables through a straw!

Tell you what, probably the best thing I can do is pray for you so you don't get hurt. ;\)

That would be HIGHLY appreciated. I need all the help I can get!

I suspect God looks down on me and thinks, "Lost cause."
