If you were walking to your afternoon stand,you heard a ruckus,looked over and saw a big,whatever big is to you,buck,with his horns caught in a fence,briars whatever,what would you do?
I know what I would do,shoot him and tell the story,what about you?

You can't possibly walk past a suffering deer and NOT shoot it, can you?
The proper thing to do would be to call your local GW and get him out there to decide what to do. I'm sure that after he disposed of the deer, he would give the deer to you. He might not though.
He might tell you to shoot it right then, and he may later come out and look at the deer....
I think it would be wrong to simply walk away from a suffering animal like that..

I'd get my cellphone out and get a pic and video of him. Depending on if I had service would depend on if I'd call the GW but I'd probably try to call either way. If I can't get through i'd say I would put him down because i don't want to see him suffer anymore.

I agree it would be hard to not shoot it and end its pain. I couldn't just walk by and let it suffer. Call GW keep the rack for a memory and give the meat to hunters for the hungry if allowed.

Many years ago a friend and I were hunting a farm up in Wilson County and found a doe stuck in a fence. Somehow the very tips of her hoof had got twisted up in a doubled strand of barbed wire. She was hanging there, her hoof 4 ft. up in the air. She didn't look bad. It was cool weather and didn't look like she had even struggled much. So, we grabbed a stick, untwisted the wire and her hoof fell out. But now, her leg was straight out and stiff and she obviously wasn't going to get up. So we had the 'what about the coyotes' conversation, and we ended up putting her in the back of a Cherokee and driving her to my place, where I put her in a shed. In spite of all my daughter and I could do (water, milk w/ sugar in it, oatmeal, grapes, and on and on, even trying to get her to move that let) she died in that pen after suffering another 3 or 4 weeks. Never got back on her feet. Bottom line: we should have put her down immediately. That was the only right and kind thing to do. And it's a wonder one of us didn't get hurt, as much as we were around that doe.

I understand people's concerns over a "suffering" animal. But often we misjudge what Nature is capable of. I've seen severely injuried animals survive and prosper for years afterwards.
Unless an animal is truly near death, I'm going to let Nature take her course, even though she can be cruel.
