I think that there are a lot of factors that go into being a successful hunter and the mental toughness is for sure one of them especially when the weather gets bitter cold and windy rainy days and in late season when sightings get scarce. I think skill, luck, mental toughness, location and a host of other factors can come into play to being successful especially for mature bucks. Main thing is enjoy the hunt and time put into it,when it ceases to become a pleasure and enjoyment and seems like a burden to get out there then it's time to find another past time.

I think if you lose your mental edge than you start losing patience, more prone to make mistakes, and may force things. This in turn, drastically reduces chances of luck. Even in perfect conditions, locations, weather,..etc. when it comes down to you and a mature buck you still need a little luck. So in my opinion, mental toughness is critical.

The mental part comes in scouting and stand placement.

I disagree, somewhat.
After 35 plus years of deer hunting, scouting and hanging stands in the proper place is like a carpenter measuring ONCE and cutting ONCE....Even though I still love it, I find it easier and easier to figure them out....
Now, trying to convince myself to stay all day when the temps are below freezing and the deer are not cooperating fully, THAT is when I think the mental toughness comes in......

I've seen people who are more successful than others simply out of mental toughness. They will get out there even when the conditions are horrible, and that has led to some of their greatest success.

To me, "mental toughness" is maintaining my sanity while waiting for the season to open. Stay'n in my stand all day is made easy by the anticipation I feel (and it has pay'd off many times). Ain't nuthin like it!!! I'm almost dissapointed sometimes, when a good one comes in early and my day gets cut short, bad weather or no. When the day comes that I don't get up feelin this way...well, thats when I guess I'll up take up birdwatch'n or sumpthin.

Say you have been hunting a buck all season. You haven't seen him in a month, no trail cam pics of him in over month, and the landowner says he hasn't seen him either. You think he is dead but haven't hear of anyone killing him or you think he left the area. You've spent two years trying to kill this deer and only hunt his area when conditions are perfect. You still pursue him and one day he shows up about ten minutes before dark and you get your shot. To me, that is being "mentally tough."
Scouting and stand placement is also mental, but you have facts, knowledge, and commons sense to assist you with your decision. You don't have that when you are in a tree waiting on a buck of a lifetime to show up.

i really dont approach hunting with mental toughness from the standpoint of sitting and hunting deer....i do from the scouting standpoint and the Food plot preparation standpoint. you have to make those two things happen and then the sitting and waiting is all pleasure for me. i dont look at that part as hard anymore because if you wait long enough the odds turn in your favor. As Jim Shockey says, if you see a buck on a particular stand locatin it is only a matter of time before he shows up "there" again...... i believe this.
