I went to LBL Thursday, July 22nd for a pre season reconnaissance for the upcoming deer season. I was really surprised. All the crops (that were not supposed to be planted) are really looking good. Looks like it is about 50/50 corn and beans.
I got there about noon and began seeing deer almost immediately. Ended up with a count of 43 total from noon to 6pm. It was really HOT, 96 degrees with a slight breeze but it did't seem to bother the deer. I saw five antlered bucks and the remainder was antlerless and fawns. There could have been a few more bucks in the mix that I only got a glimpse of and could not confirm buck or doe.
Looks like it should be a banner year there!

Very promising report. I had heard that crops were being planted I just didn't know to what extent. I'm glad to hear that beans are 50/50. Weather has kept me away for the time being. As long as we get some more rain between now and opening day I think we will have a great season at LBL.

Thanks again for that report.

there are a lot of people who hunt that area already.I would say other than wilcat hollow it gets hunted more than most.I guess you were trying to make a joke from how I read your post but that area does get hunted hard.

As a newbie to LBL 4 years ago wildcat hollow is where my interest was first drawn. Since I have found many other areas to hunt with less pressure and less people. Seen several nice bucks last year just out of bow range and one 5yds away that I just couldn't get a shot on. Glad to hear that the crops were planted eventhough I don't hunt the fields.

I have a question about LBL. I am new to putting in on draw hunts and i put in for LBL, but from the posts i see here it seems that you can hunt there anytime. Is that right or are you just scouting in case you get drawn?

Guess you know you have to buy a lbl permit too. Also don't be one of the idiots hunting in the closed area on 16.lolWe see trucks parked there hunting almost every year early in the season.

You have to have EVERY permit/license like you would to make you legal in TN. You also have to have a LBL user permit also. You can buy it the same place you get all your other licenses. You can ONLY drive on numbered roads and you can ONLY park ONE vehicle length off those roads. You can't block any roads either. There are several OFF LIMIT areas as well as campgrounds, cemeteries, and all shooting ranges. Many of those same NO HUNTING zones become open on December 1st AND prior to that you can scout out many of them WITHOUT any weapon.
You can NOT Bow hunt anytime there is a Quota hunt OR the ONE day prior. There are only 6 days total of NO HUNTING due to quotas and the rest is wide open for Bow. Season typicaly starts the first day that TN starts but ends at or around MLK day in January. This gives you an extra week and a half to Bow hunt after TN season has ended. It is advised to get a LBL road use map as well as a map showing the areas. If you plan to camp at LBL while hunting and you don't want to stay at a campground you will have to get a LBL Back Country user permit instead of the regular user permit. No check in but you must check any deer harvested out if the South checking station is open. if it is not open or has closed for the season you must check the harvest in at the nearest checking station and report it as a LBL deer.

Good luck hunting.

This may be one of the most over-looked things getting otherwise "honest" bowhunters a citation for "deer hunting in a closed season".

Can't tell you how many times I've prevented many hunters from heading afield at LBL when the season was closed. Not to mention, I know many who have done it, just simply overlooking that LBL has some "closed" days scattered around.

Should you be caught with a deer there on one of these closed days, your ignorance of the law will become "no excuse", and you can expect it to be confiscated, even if it's the biggest buck you ever killed, and you made an "honest" mistake.

Check the regs closely for those closed days.
They are "scattered" and could be more or less from year to year.

Another big issue is many hunters erroneously assuming, since they have a Sportsman's or Lifetime License, that they're not required to purchase the LBL Hunting Permit.
EVERYONE who hunts LBL is required to purchase this permit. There are no exceptions.

I went up last weekend and looked around, boy was it hot! I didn't find a tick one on me. There must not be any up there this year. \:D
Saw a bunch of deer a few antlers. Walked about 5 or 6 miles in some areas Id never hunted. I'm going back up toward the end of Aug when it cools down to the low 90s. LOL

I think maybe the controlled burns have helped lower the
tick population......I haven't seen near as many ticks for
the last few years and I did before the burns occured.

Part of LBL goes up into Kentucky, correct?
Does a Tennessee hunter have to have Kentucky liscences to hunt that portion of LBL?

The larger portion of LBL is in KY.
But there aren't any deer on the KY side. ;\)
