Do to the harsh winter we just had. Does it seem to anyone else that the deer seem to be healthier? Or am I just glad to see the deer...I have noticed more off spring this year and the color of the deer looks better. Plus there seem to a lot more deer....
Anyone else???

That's can be a good thing in the areas hit hardest by EHD three years ago. Plus, fawn survival was low in some of these areas in '07 and '08, which slowed the rebound from the die-off. Although some won't be as pleased to see the rebound. The better than average antler development seen in these areas the last couple of years has been because of the die-off. Fewer deer sharing the food resources means each deer gets a higher percent of their diet composed of the best food sources, which leads to better antler development. Once the herd density rebounds, antler development will decline.

That's a new one on me. Never heard of deer color being used as a measure of health.

Yup, herds are rebounding. But as previously mentioned, that has its downsides as well.

Anyone else??? [/quote]

Dang, seems like my area is just backward to everybody else's this year! First I don't see any bucks on my trail cam pics, and very few fawns at that. I wonder about that...

My area was hit BAD by the EHD in williamson but the deer herd looks healthier then ever now. Saw more big racks on camera last year than any in the past 18. Just like bsk said less deer = better and more food for the ones that made it. I also think the reason i saw so many mature bucks in the rut was that so many does died from EHD they actually had to get up and move to find them a piece...SHOOT MORE DOE!!!!

and dont forget that in much of Tennesse we have now had 2 or 3 strong years of acorn mast to boost the winter health of the deer and this is always a good thing.
