When will the headgear of a buck quit growing ,for that season? What month do you think they are finished off?.

When the velvet is shed, which is usually mid to late August in my area. I believe that in general, the further north you go the later they shed. It is very uncommon to kill a buck in TN in velvet during archery unless the buck has some endocrine problem so that they have a delayed testosterone surge (that is what triggers velvet shedding), but it does occur occasionally in KY, for example.

I hit a deer in 1976 on august 17th, when i was a teenager and it was a really nice 8 pt buck. Everything on the horns was firm down around the bases but at the antler tips it was really pourous indicating it was hardening adn 95 to 98 % complete as far as length was concerned. i believe the last two weeks of august is finalizing this process and then the first two weeks of sept they just harden completely. in this area the 21st of sept to the 29 th is shedding as indicated on game cams we have out. as stated above i believe the farther north you go you may find that a little faster but i can say for lawrence/wayne county this is really accurate!

Williamson County bucks usually shed around the first week of Sept. I know of a lot of velvet bucks that got killed in the first week of KY season.

I have killed bucks with velvet hanging from the antlers, on the bow hunt up here in claiborne co.
But do they grow until they shed?

They stop growing within 3 weeks of shedding for the most part as the antlers are then finalizing the hardening process and that takes some time. By the middle of august it has been my experience that the length is set at 98% of total growth. Remember this material is supplied in general by blood and this material takes some time to finalize.....Bsk i am sure could elaborate more but from what i have witnessed the last 30 days before final shedding of velvet is relatively mostly hardening, not further growing in length......
