my wife is sooting a hoyt mnt sport cam and 1/2 compound bow. its set on 45 lbs and she is shoot a easton axis 500 spine with the rage 40ke broadhead. arrow has blazer vanes and she can bust my nock at 25 yards. she has a 3 pin site, which is set on 20 25 and 30. and she can shoot 2 inch groups at 30 yards. amazing to see her shoot so well. my question? do ya'll think this set up will kill a deer? she killed turkey at 20 yards with no problem. but no pass through. try cut on contact broad head, but its not getting the penatration like the rage. so do ya'll think she will be fine on shooting a deer. were keeping shots 25 and less. thanks for any advice!

Plenty of hunters kill deer with 45 pound recurves all the time. Since she is shooting lights out she should not have a problem at all. Its all about shot placement.

A whitetail deer can be taken down with as little as 25 ft.lbs. of energy, so yes it will do the job as long as proper arrow placement is made. I am not knocking your choice of broadhead but I did some quick estimation on her k/e and you may want to think about a cut on contact broadhead due to the low k/e. Going by my rough estimation she is shooting around 39-42 ft.lbs. coming out of the bow--as the arrow goes down range the k/e will fall and may cause broadhead failure the further away you get from the bow. I know you said she doesn't get the penetration shooting into the target, but a live animal, with blood to lubricate that small diameter Axis arrow is alot different as far as consistency than a foam target. One reason you may be getting better penetration from the Rage than a 3-blade fixed shooting into a foam target is because you have less surface area to create friction with the Rage. I'll bet when you shoot in a animal, with proper placement you will see a different result--maybe not a pass-thru, but more of equal penetration and you want have to worry about the blades opening or not.

Absolutely no problem at all. When I was growing up, a 45-lb pull recurve was a common "man's" bow. I killed my first archery deer with a 40-lb recurve.
I would, however, recommend smaller 2 or 3-blade heads, and cannot emphasize enough the importance of using razor sharp ones. The RAGE is certainly sharp enough, but not so sure it would be my pick ---- could be some penetration issues on a large buck.

Agree with all the above post...My wife started at 40 lbs and her first deer at 23 yards was a pass thru. I believe if archers would crank down there bows it would help most shooters. Because if a bow is rated at 80 lbs, it doesn't require that much to kill a deer but hunters think they have to shoot a high draw weight.. Good Luck to her...

Agreed with everyone else, i shot my first deer with a bow when i was 8 and it was set at 40lbs and the doe was 25 yards away. i just wouldn't take any 40+ yard shots
