I guess some guys get me wrong... I'm not in the slaughter mode and I have let a lot of bucks walk over the years... I guess I still look after the rights of young or older guys that just got into the sport that just want to hunt and kill a deer...... This is the reason I'm not for reducing the buck limits.... I won't kill three bucks a year but if a new hunter or a kid wants too, I'm all for it.... If Tim Tebow starts hunting, I want him to kill all the bucks he can.... He's already killed all the TN football players....LOL

8. You never seen many other hunter while in the woods...
That's the only one a disagree with. The "ole days" for me was gun season in KY. It was a young war with orange everywhere and continuous gunfire. 70% of all deer killed during the entire deer season where killed opening morning of gun season.
I love today's hunting where I hardly hear a shot the entire opening weekend of gun season. And after Thanksgiving week you don't hear shots at all.

That's the only one a disagree with. The "ole days" for me was gun season in KY. It was a young war with orange everywhere and continuous gunfire. That was also the case in TN.
Our deer seasons were of fewer days, there were fewer places to deer hunt, and more hunters more intent on hunting as many days as possible before the season was over.
I grew up in both Obion & Weakley counties. There wasn't even a deer season in Obion Co., nor was there a deer season in many other West TN counties. Many, many people traveled from Memphis and Nashville to hunt Weakley County. You would see more Shelby and Davidson County vehicles up and down the roadsides than locals.
We also didn't even have a special "muzzleloader" season until sometime in the 1980's, and it took many years before many hunters participated in "muzzleloading".
Now, the hunting is "spread" over more days and more counties, providing much more "elbow" room per hunter than back in those "good ole days". Not to mention, the annual deer harvest in Obion County now greatly exceeds what used to happen in Weakley.

Sometime back in the early 1970's I was squirrel hunting with my grandfather and father in the Obion River bottoms. We were all in the same vicinity separated by maybe 100 yards or so.
I had two deer nearly run over me and disappear into the slash water. Reporting what I had seen to my grandfather and father, neither believed me, and both thought maybe I'd seen a couple big dogs. I never doubted what I'd seen, and they later believed me when I showed them some fresh deer tracks. Doesn't seem that long ago.

I do miss the days gone by.I remember my dad hunted for years before he killed a buck.I killed a button on my first juv. hunt 30 yrs ago it made him so proud & i was hooked. When my son killed a doe on his juv. hunt 9 yrs ago i knew what my dad felt it was a right of passing. Now dad cant hunt my son hunts with his friends & i find myself missing that bond.I lease 600 ac that has plenty of deer but only kill maybe one nice deer a year thats all i want i use the land to run horses & train bird dogs on.I let a couple of friends hunt it they do well but i think the real joy to me was the bond with family.Any way ive got a 11 mth old granson now & cant wait to take him.

Good story Wes. I remember those days. Tennessee, has made much progress in a relatively short period of time.

I absolutely do not miss hunting when you hunted several days and not see a dern thing. I don't miss the days that you better shoot the first antlered buck that came by or you might not get another chance at one.
I do miss dog hunting here in Alabama. I imagine I always will. The social aspect of that way of hunting is unmatched in today's world. Everyone got along, even neighboring clubs and everyone was tickled when a deer was killed. I've even had neighboring clubs offer to turn loose their dogs on us to run a a buck saw crossing the logging road that split the clubs. Now that is getting along.
However, as I said, I don't miss hunting when seeing a buck, any buck, was an accomplishment.

I remember the days when just seeing a track would freak people out. I saw two does on my very first deer hunt in 1966 in Lewis county, and I almost hyperventilated.
