Very good post backstraps, your right though I'll take blame and say yes I guess I'm arm chair quarterbacking if you will. These people do put alot of time and effort into these hunts and from the times that I've got to hunt in there if you draw a filter plant stand hang on because your going to get to see some good uns and even have a chance probably at getting a shot at one.

I honestly wasnt trying to slam anyone's comments on here. I just know first hand how much time and efforts go into just having these hunts, let alone the work involved. It takes a lot of time and dedication to volunteer. If a person didnt really enjoy interacting with people, helping in ways possible to assist hunters, and seeing quality wildlife, the volunteer program really wouldnt be worth the time required.
If I had a free hand to make any changes I wanted, I am not sure there would be too many changes myself. Due to the "PR" crap, and having to deal with the Government's rules and regs just to have the unts... I would probably lean towards regulating the doe population myself and donating the meat to a food for the hungry, and have a very few # of hunters drawn each year for a Mature Buck Hunt only.
If there are hunters on here that hasnt ever applied, or has ever been drawn to hunt inside HAAP, if you dont ever apply and take a chance, then it is really your loss of opportuniry. I have hunted inside the facilty many times,BUT, it is hunting...just because you see Bruce's big deer pics, hear stories, etc etc, there is no gaurantee for anything other than the opportunity. What more can a hunter ask for?
Every year when I hear someone I know was drawn, I can only congrat them, and send them nothing but best wishes!
Good Luck to all that has applied, hope if you get drawn you can drag one of Bruce's big picture Bucks outta there

Is the TBI web sight($29) the only place to get a background check if you live in Sullivan County?

I know the ladies at the Police Staion in KSP will not do them anymore. I live in Washington Co.... the jail will do them, you just have to come back in a couple days and pick it up. Possibly check the jail house.
I know Hawkins county police stations will do it too.
YOU DONT have to get the County you live in the do the background check. Most jail houses doesnt have a fee at all.

I had the opportunity to hunt there several years ago and enjoyed it. Drawn for the filter plant region IIRC. Saw a doe and one smaller buck within shooting range, several more while waiting at my pick up point and quite a few nice bucks out of the back of the truck on our way out. Enough that I didn't feel bad about the 5 1/2 hour drive that it took for me to get there from my home. That being said I just picked up my backgroud check from the local sheriffs dept on Friday, got my application printed out, picking up a money order later today and hope to get all of it in the mail tomorrow. With any kind of luck I'll be making a 5 1/2 hr drive back east again this fall.

i just put in again but doubt i will get drawn again since i got to hunt it last year but i will try anyway. i wasnt putting the place down at all but would like to see some changes.i know a few of the volunteers and they are really good guys.sucess at holston is all about luck of the draw and i think the numbers of deer there are way down from what they used to be!!! also the late nov hunt last year was canceled because of a snow storm so those 80 hunters will get first choice and make getting drawed even harder.

Hello Worm I hope you the best of luck getting inside this year again. The chances are really not as bad as you think. The deer population has dropped over the years, but thats kinda the idea they had inside HAAP to reduce numbers and control the population. In addition to the number of deer dropping over the years, so has the number of applications getting turned in. With the new regs a couple years ago on the back ground check, increase in hunter fees, ect less hunters are sending in the applications now too.
As for the 80 hunters from last year, there were only 55 and they dont have any choice what so ever. They will get a hunt but it will be on a day not associated with any of the draw dates in which you applied for. So that will not hamper your chances.
Good luck, and hope you get a big'un!
