Normally I get to go alot during the week. That time of year, my painting business is slow.
Sometimes I go and sit all day.
Most guys on Chaney tell me that I deserve everything that I harvest since I put in the time.....

For those that seem to be unhappy with the hunting in TN. How much hunting time do you actually get in over the course of the season? Because if your answer is EVERY WEEKEND or less, then you just don't have the odds in your favor of ever having a good chance of consistently seeing better bucks through out the year. More than likely your hunt consist of a 3-4 hour morning hunt on sat and sunday. Thats 32 hours (being generous) for a month and around 96 for entire season...
Point being... you have to realize that is not enough time. If you got some "magic" food plot that keeps deer in it all the time, then that might be different...
But it ultimately comes down to time on stand if everything else is done correctly.
I only average about 85 hours of treestand time per year, yet I've been fairly successful at killing older and mature bucks. And I certainly don't have a magic food plot!
I'm not so sure it is simply a matter of time spent on stand. I believe hunting smart is far more important than hunting a lot. I've watched hunters spend innumerable hours in poor stand locations and not see the type of older buck they are after. Telling them to "hunt more" is the wrong advice. Hunting smarter is the key.
Of course, extremes will exist at either end of the scale. You probably won't be successful at killing mature bucks if you only hunt a couple of weekends per year. But at the same time, you can spend hundreds of hours in poor stand locations and be equally unsuccessful.

Hunting a lot will up your odds of killing a mature buck only if you have a lot of different areas to hunt. If you have a small piece of property it will probably eliminate your chances completely.

Very true...I like you Rdg RNR hunt a lot of public ground. I dont hunt my prime spots (my private ground and good funnels back in public a good ways) until the last 10 days of october or later. I am out there almost everyweekend and 2-3 afternoons a week. There is always a chance, Im just not taking the chance on moving into my prime areas until they are right. Once I start to see deer older than 1.5 on their feet I take my days off and get back to the funnels.

I believe some people take these post to literal. When I say "try to put more time in to your hunting", in no way did I say go sit in the SAME stand everyday all day. Some of you need to let common sense prevail here. DO YOU ONLY HAVE ONE SET UP THAT YOU CAN HUNT? If so, then yes you have very limited opportunities on when you can effectively hunt. If you only have one set up but large tract of land, then this would be the person who is not putting in the effort. Which is what the original post called for....A CONSIDERATION... NOT THIS IS EXACTLY WHAT YOU SHOULD BE DOING! I just assume most on here know basic deer hunting skills but I guess in future I need to point every single aspect out.

I consider weekend hunts to be ample time. Now during bow season, I'll usually try to get an afternoon hunt or two in. I try to mix up my hunting times some and definitely hunting spots.

LOL Just saying, not that you do it. Talking about taking a post literally and letting common sense prevail.
I hunted on a large track of public land last season (40,000 acres) and still managed to over hunt several areas. Older deer have little tolerance for that sort a thing.
Yeah, you have to spell everything out for folks like me that have no common sense or hunting skills.
