Never once did I let myself believe that a deer of a lifetime couldn't walk right up that trail. Today I'm 40 and will have to admit I STILL get that same feeling no matter if its just a little doe slipping by or a buck I intend to try and get a shot on.

I agree. The only difference between now and then is: what constitutes a "buck of a lifetime." Back then it would have been a 100-class 8 pointer. Now realistically it would be much, much larger and older!

Ditto..... Just because I miss the "ole days" doesn't mean I have a problem with the hunting now or letting bucks walk... I think we all grow as hunters and are goals change... I just like the days my buddies and I could sit around the camp fire and B.S. about the deer (didn't matter their size or sex) we killed..... JMO

I too think we are in the good ol days right now, atleast considering the 30 years that I have deer hunted in TN That is. People still have the choice to shoot and be happy with most any deer they see, thats what it is, a choice. Nobody here has had any type trophy hunting stuffed down their throat at all, as their are no AR's or earn a buck, etc. in place for the Statewide TN deer seasons. Hunters here still have the wide open choice to kill and be happy with whatever floats their boat! The only way you could be negatively affected by how others hunt these days is if you choose to let it bother you, as the rules are the same (actually better) as you can still hunt exactly as your Dad and Grandpa did many years ago. I think if everybody just hunted to the level that makes them happy, and quit worrying about what anybody else is doing, we would all be much beter off! I dont think its too complicated, and I definitely enjoy it as much as I ever did, as I still hunt with family, and we all still shoot anything that makes us happy!

People always think the past was the good old days. Its human nature, but not neccessarily correct.

I don't miss the slaughter days, I far enjoy the way I hunt now and I don't find it complicated, it is still simple and enjoyable to me.

IMO far too many folks who shoot smaller bucks worry about the other folks who focus on bigger bucks too much.

Agreed

I completely agree.

What they said x 3.

With that said, Deer hunting is all what you make of it yourself. The thrill is still there for me as well. I also want to disagree with several of the above posts that say that taking a deer isn't a challenge any more. It may not be as much of a challenge for a seasoned hunter, but it is a challenge for many. Not everyone can sit in a box blind on private land. And don't even mention taking one with a bow! Some have to bust their butt and really hunt. I guess a lot of it has to do with each person's point of view. I have quit looking for everyone else's approval and do what thrills me.

Deer huntin is what you make it. I enjoy the "good ole days" every deer season, just the same as I did back then. I get excited the same way I did 20 years ago about what ever I kill, weather it's a 3inch spike or a doe. It's still enjoyable to me all these years later for the same reasons. Missing the good ole days is for those who have "matured".

Winchester,
I just tried to say the same thing in my above post, but you just said it better. Well spoken.

I've never hunted in TN, but 35 years ago here in Iowa, I would refer to that time period as the "Hard old days". There where 7 of us who hunted, if we filled half the tags it was a great season. Iowa had a draw system and just because you sent money in, didn't mean you got a tag, and most of the tags where buck only(one forked antler), and the bucks where hard to come by. You could hunt all day and only see a couple deer, now I have to watch my driving just getting to my spot so I don't hit one with my truck. I still get the thrill when shooting any deer, but have raised the stakes over the last 10 to 15 years due to seeing more and bigger bucks, and to honest that's one of the big reasons I deer hunt.
