"The difference between men and boys is the price of their toys"..........this and many other phrases describes the "evolution" of boys to men. Many times men pass this mindset down to their children even before they reach adulthood, even if not intentionally. Many times children want to emulate their fathers and thusly "follow their lead"......
If dad will only shoot a 120 plus, then that's what I want to do.
Most all of us, especially back before people talked much about SCORES, we went deer hunting. I can not for the life of me remember anyone talk about what a deer scored back then. If you shot an eight pointer, it was bigger (had more points)than your friends seven pointer, regardless of the score....
These days when talking to hunters you often hear them say, "I shot a 135 inch ten point". By throwing in the 135 inch and ten point together in the same description, you get a better feel of what the deer really is, size wise. A 135 inch ten is usually smaller than a 135 eight pointer. Most here would rather shoot a 135 inch eight than a ten......even though the inch score is the same the mass, tine length and maybe spread is greater than the ten.....thusly a "better trophy"...in most regards.
Times have changed. Kids play video games now instead of ball. When was the last time you saw anyone playing "kick the can"..?
Hunting has changed as well......As someone noted, the deer population has grown so much that we rarely think much of killing a small buck or a doe. it's just not a big deal anymore.
I guess you could say that man has caused his own boredom.....so to speak. he has done such a good job with the deer herd, that now he grows bored with it. Similar to builders that constantly want to build the bigger bridge or athletes that want to run the fastest race ever.....humans constantly have to set goals and then meet them....it's just in our DNA.
We now have passed the test in regards to herd management. Now, I guess we want to do more......the same with hunters...they want MORE!
I'll put an end to this rambling (lol) by simply saying this..."I still get excited when I see a deer. I may be more selective in what i shoot, but not what I see. I love watching deer, no matter what size or sex they are. A big buck is just icing on the cake, but certainly not the WHOLE cake....."

Deer hunting to me is much more FUN than it was back in the "ole days". To me that's what its all about. I can remember hunting for weeks and never seeing a deer or any other stich of wildlife for that matter. It was pretty boring and easy to get discouraged.
Now there are lots of deer and every hunt now seems to be eventful. This deer hunter is certainly GLAD the "ole days" are gone!
I think some are worrying too much about how others are choosing to hunt and they are really reaching for reasons to discourage it. Just hunt fellas, dont think so much.

I think we miss the lack of arguing over what should and shouldn't be considered success. Back then, we all had the same answer: see a deer and kill a deer. Now, like pastorbmp said, we are spoiled by an incredibly robust and healthy deer herd. That robust deer herd ALLOWS us to be picky. Now we have the opportunity to develop different criteria for success which opens the door to all the arguing.

As far as killing mature or big antlered deer these are the best times Ive ever saw in the state. I do however miss some of my old hunting buddies and the times we had, not being so concerned with all the details that I am today and more concerned with just having a good time.
Would I like to go back to that....na.

As has been said many times, these are the good ole days. Without doubt, by any measure, the 1st decade of this new century has been the best for deer hunting in Tennessee's history. And it could still get better!
. . . . our deer populations have gotten to the point where simply killing a deer is little if any challenge. . . . . . I far enjoy the way I hunt now and I don't find it complicated, it is still simple and enjoyable to me. Same here. My hunting is not that "complicated", and much more "enjoyable" than in times past. Although I must admit I once was just as excited to see a "spike" buck as I now need to see a mature buck to have that much excitement. Best news is I see more mature ones now than I saw spikes during the first few years I deer hunted.
This deer hunter is certainly GLAD the "ole days" are gone! This one, too.

I started hunting in '82 and can honestly say that FOR ME the thrill is still the same. You see in 82 I was only 12 years old and anytime I was fortunate enough to see any deer I got that special feeling that only deer hunters understand. Never once did I let myself believe that a deer of a lifetime couldn't walk right up that trail. Today I'm 40 and will have to admit I STILL get that same feeling no matter if its just a little doe slipping by or a buck I intend to try and get a shot on. LOVE IT, LOVE IT , LOVE IT. Best part is with exception of cameraman with me every now and then, I'm usually alone and can always make my decision on what to shoot or pass up. I do target 4.5 or older but would never let 150 or better go. That is only my preference and don't expect anyone else to do the same nor should you. Good luck to all.
