What has happen to deer hunting...... Reading all the post about what is a trophy and buck limits got me wondering... I started deer hunting 30 some years ago (grew up coon hunting). I don't remember nobody back then worrying about limits or the age of the buck... If it was legal, the buckshot would fly... I wonder if big money and hunting shows have changed the culture of deer hunting and where its at today... I'm not saying its all bad but I do miss when deer hunting was simple...JMO

No our deer populations have gotten to the point where simply killing a deer is little if any challenge. Most hunters have grown up these days with lots of deer to hunt, and as they mature they begin to get more selective. They then pass that selectivity onto their children.

I don't miss the slaughter days, I far enjoy the way I hunt now and I don't find it complicated, it is still simple and enjoyable to me.

IMO far too many folks who shoot smaller bucks worry about the other folks who focus on bigger bucks too much.

G-N-B there was a similar post on here last deer season, in fact they tried to get people to post some pics of small bucks they had killed back in the day.

I agree with you though, i do miss the ole days when it was a huge deal when someone shot a spike or any antlered deer. I admit I try somewhat to not shot the little bucks anymore, but if i need some meat then i will take what ever is legal.

I also agree that hunting shows and commercialization have been a big cause of big buck mania. However, I also think as we get good at doing things then we as human beings tend to raise the bar a bit and try to challenge ourselves with tougher challenges.

For the first time I agree with you about something..... Hunting was alot more fun 20 years ago. My dad and I started letting bucks walk about 10 years ago when we got a private lease. I enjoy watching all deer while I'm hunting but dont get excited over small bucks anymore.

We kill more and bigger deer now, but it seems the best hunting memories I have are from the old days when we hunted hard just to kill a deer!

Me too. I have hunted only in Tennessee for 44 years and the good
ole days were special. It was almost a community event when
someone was lucky enough to kill a deer.

I got lucky in 1970 and killed a 6 pointer (my very first deer)
with a Bear Grizzly recurve. I was celebrity for awhile and I
must admit I enjoyed it, as the stories grew (ha).

I can even remember a story on the front page of our local
newspaper in the mid 60's that was titled "Man Sees Deer"!

why must you always put people down?what an ego you have.just because some don't hunt like you doesn't mean they didn't grow up it just means they hunt different than you and learned antlers aren't what makes hunting enjoyable.

We had a deer population where I grew up and the dogs would run them to us sometimes... I let deer walk now and I read a lot of bull sometimes on how everybody should hunt... I do miss the days when hunting was more of a social sport then a competition....JMO

I didn't put anyone down, I stated what is pretty much a fact, that as most hunters progress through their hunting careers it becomes less about the numbers of animals they kill. That has been proven numerous times over. Sure there are some who don't go that direction, and that is their choice, but many do.

The state of hunting in TN reminds somewhat me of what I experienced as a Christian school administrator. When I took over the school, we hardly had any special days, field trips, or fun activities. Just to have an extra five minute break was a great thrill to the students. We began to schedule more field trips, some fun activities and special days. Over the years, I found the more "fun" things we did, the kids got used to it and didn't have as much fun as they did back when there were no fun activities and they only got a five minute extra break. That five minute extra meant more than a field trip or a special day. In other words, they got spoiled! When we have little or nothing, we enjoy any little thing extra we get. But, when we have much...the little things aren't as exciting and it takes bigger and bigger things to make us happy. Bottom line, back in the day - we were thrilled just to see a deer - DOE OR BUCK!!! To kill one small buck made a great season! But, we are kind of spoiled now. But, I wouldn't trade today for the good old days of going back to hunting day after day without even seeing a deer. I'll take being spoiled in this case!!! Expectations have been adjusted, and we need to realize that. I think reminding ourselves how it "used to be" will help us appreciate how it now is. I have adjusted my hunting, so that I seek to kill older bucks and let younger ones walk - but I still get excited when I see a doe or a young buck. I think back to what would have been racing through my head 20 years ago.

G-N-B, you can say that again...It's funny my wife and I were just talking about that same subject...back in the day...no trail camera's, no high tech suits to wear, not even cover scent. A deer was a deer and you were happy to take one. Now days, well do I need to say more. I will say we have come along way and yes the deer hunting is better but its not as simple as it was. Is it more like work or is it still as fun?
