For those that seem to be unhappy with the hunting in TN. How much hunting time do you actually get in over the course of the season? Because if your answer is EVERY WEEKEND or less, then you just don't have the odds in your favor of ever having a good chance of consistently seeing better bucks through out the year. More than likely your hunt consist of a 3-4 hour morning hunt on sat and sunday. Thats 32 hours (being generous) for a month and around 96 for entire season. Now sit in one spot for 96 hours then you might catch a sighting or two of a buck you would love to shoot but I don't think anyone here is that hard core. Point being... you have to realize that is not enough time. If you got some "magic" food plot that keeps deer in it all the time, then that might be different. But if you want to see the better bucks your going to need to be back in the woods off the plot. Now your visual has drop dramatically in most cases, which obviously is going to make it much harder to spot those SLOW moving bucks that are creeping by. But it ultimately comes down to time on stand if everything else is done correctly. JMO. And I know some are going to claim bad deer herd or habitat in their area, for those that TRUELY are... well time in stand is still your friend but the "better buck" term may not apply. Now get out there and get a buck of a lifetime!! ;\)

Im satisfied with TN hunting and the quality of deer in Tn,with that being said,I hunt alot and I mean alot,my job lets me hunt pretty much when ever I want, aside from the evenings through the week..I work 3pm to 11pm Mon-Fri so I get every weekend and every day of the week up to 2pm..Most times I hunt through the week up to 2pm then go to work..Alot of times I hunt every day of the week during season, and I have yet to see a B&C deer..And when I hunt I like to stay most of the day,if I don't sit all day i don't come out of the woods till atleast 12 or 1pm...I do believe you have to put your time in to kill a mature deer, I don't think its the sole deciding factor..I'd rather hunt in a great spot where you know a mature deer frequents then hunt a bad spot with low odds and hope by chance a mature deer comes by...I've been watching your posts and you seem like a know all deer hunter..Thats just my observations.

Certainly not a know all, sorry for that impression. Only want to help people. Not once did I say "Boone&Crockett" in this post, I stated "better bucks" or larger, same thing. The size will be relative to the area. I hunt everyday of the season. Mornings and evenings early and late season. Mid-day for the most part during Nov. I hunt as many new properties I can, and have yet to find an area in TN where you can't find a solid buck. When I stated "everything else done correctly", that would entail right location, etc....I'm only stating what I honestly believe will help folks. If your happy with your hunting then that was the point. This was more directed at those that complain without putting in the effort. Have no idea why the cheap shot from you but if you feel that my opinions are from some know it all...STOP READING!

Also I never said that time was all that is needed but rather it is a vital ingredient in seeing more and better deer. One final note... I'm new to actually posting. I've always just read this blog and others but never participated till now. So maybe I'm trying to get my knowledge out there too fast. I can assure you that I will fall off from posting as it becomes just another thing. But all in all I'm just trying to learn and pass on what I believe to be correct.

You could hunt every minute of every season and never see a B&C buck in Tennessee or alot of other states for that matter. Its like someone said earlier, you can't catch a 12 lb bass in a pond that doesn't have one. But the more time you spend in the woods definitly increases your chances of seeing the biggest buck in your area.

The longer I hunt the more I discredit time spent in the stand. I think there are times to kill big deer, and there are times you can hunt to ensure you don't kill big deer.

I dont go to my best areas until the rut, and I mean the rut. Sure I have a shot at killing a big deer the other times out there, but Im mostly hunting does and observing. The two exceptions are when I hunt field food sources the beginning of the season, and after a prolonged bad weather streak late in the year.

Most hunters burn their stands out and more time in the woods if you dont have a large amount of land or hunt it smart will deminish your odds not improve them.

Personally, I wont be hunting on my land except one AM in september (the day Im planting my food plots) until the early muzzleloader. The day in September Im hunting on the extream southend of the property to try and kill a doe. Early muzzleloader actually off the property on the neighbors that I have sole permission to until gun opens. All of this is to keep pressure off the deer and any that I do put pushes them towards my sanctuary and the surrounding money stands.

Very good point. I did leave out the time of the season for your best odds. And the amount of land available is also very important criteria. I'm fortunate enough to have many different locations to go and hunt (though each spot will vary on time of year) and overlook the other factors sometimes...sorry. But really all I wanted to do with this post is help give a little optimism for those that seem to have sour taste in their mouth with TN deer hunting.

i also think that more time in the stand is one of the most vital factors. if you are not out there, you can't kill them. you could have all the skills and scout until you are blue in the face but if you are only out there hunting a few days a year then your odds go down considerably
