On my second ever juvi hunt my step-dad and I were gutting a doe that I was fortunate enough to shoot early that morning. While we were (by we I mean he ) busy getting her gutted I could hear something running right at us from a good distance away(it was extremely dry that yr).
I asked my step dad"you hear that?" he stops what he's doing to listen and one of the biggest bucks I've ever laid eyes on ran right past our truck and unknowingly came right to us,stopped..looked at us..and kept right on past us up the hill..to have a buck like that so close and not be able to do anything about will haunt you!

My first deer, with my first rifle, that I paid for with my money, and it was the first shot out of that gun. No kidding, you were very lucky to have even hit it, let alone kill it! Sometimes things are just meant to be! Some how I knew I would be answering this after i made that post, but it was a Remington and it said it was factory bore sighted to 100 yds. I did not have a scope i was shooting open sights at about 30 yds. I was 17 yrs old then and did not have anyone to mentor me, as I learned most of what i know on my own and I trusted Remington's reputation. My first deer, with my first rifle, that I paid for with my money, and it was the first shot out of that gun. Didn't you sight it in first? I guess by reading what i wrote above you can guess no. I wouldn't do it again knowing what i know now, but it all worked out. I must say that after that i did target shoot and i could knock a beer can down at 60-70 yds with no adjustment necessary, so it was accurate.
Don't sweat it bone collector. You are not the first to do it. I made money in college sighting in guns for people who didn't hace a place or time to shoot. I live on a farm and had my own range.the guys I did it for lived in dorms or frat houses or apartments. I got 40 bucks a gun. One guy said that my rate was too high and he just hunt without sighting in. I told him at least to use the open sights because they were usually pretty close from the factoery. He said heck no and mounted the scope he just ordered. The next morning the guy hunting with him said he shot 5 times. No deer. Imagine that.

last year I shot a doe. she was down hard so i carried my stuff back to the truck sat my win 270 in the seat threw the climber in back and started to walk away thought i'd better get my gun just incase grabbed my gun and it went off. yes, in the truck blowing a huge hole in the pass door my wife and friends still laugh when they see the hole in the door i dont think i'll live that one down anytime soon and probaly shouldn't
