Wish I had known, already put in, but if drawn maybe we can meet. I grew up within 25 miles of Hatchie NWR, and started squirrel hunting on it in the mid 70's, when I was just a kid.. Know it like the back of my hand. Not really known to produce monsters, however a friend took one there on a quota hunt about 10 years ago that netted 153. Lots of private land all around the outside of it, much is private hunting clubs who tend to manage to some degree. Lots of agriculture as well, mostly corn, beans, some milo. Never been to hard to draw for me. Maybe we will both make it.

HNWR has no impact on Pres Island or any other TWRA sanctioned quota hunt, it is Federal and handled separately.

Anyone that gets drawn, post it here or PM me. I'd like to help , provided that you could use a hand....
Gor those that KNOW the area, my help may not be needed....but, another strong back may come in handy.
Tickweed, what area do you usually hunt.?
Since they stopped assigning areas and hunters can go wherever they want, it seems that it might be abit crowded in the best areas....
Do you ever see this happen?
Do you usually go far in ?
Do you hunt fields?
Ground blind, climber...what?
just curious, more than anything....

I have a small tucked away place in what was area 1, that is boarded by a big hunting club from Memphis. Its on the refuge, but most drive by it,never knowing its NWR. Yes, I have seen it crowded in certain areas. As you know, boat acess is allowed, but the main road runs fairly close to the river, especially from area 2 thru area 4. I've been all up and down bear creek canal, and love to hunt the beaverdam crossings. My favorite area would be the far upper end in area 4, by boat. Never took a big racked deer on the NWR, but there are a few. I have friends who have most of the property across the river from area 3 upwards, and they kill a nice one once in a while. Oh yea, often on the gun hunt, many times I'll hunt on the ground , cause I will many times go in deep. Also, seen many slipping back and forth under the interstate bridges, plus lots of salt under them from bridge salting's in the winter. A fun hunt, especially to take a decent buck or some meat for the freezer. You know where the Pine thicket is on the river in area 4? Man, it's weird to see a pine thicket on the river bank in Hatchie bottom.

the pine thicket is not too far downstream from the landing at The Big Eddy, right?
Been a while since I was in that part. It may be closer to kelso lake....can't be sure.
That place in area 1 that you hunt, would that be down Quarter Rd. ??? or maybe right across the road from the refuge (very upper end of area 1)there is a place that not many people know is actually the refuge......
Anyone ever bother bicycling up the power line from Powell Road, area 2 to just behind the refuge office.....?
When you get to poplar creek, you have to stop, but that area was always very thick and swampy. used to squirrel hunt it many many years ago........may have changed alot since then. I would like to go back up in there some day.....need a bike, though. I'll worry about the deer if and when i get him down...lol.
lot of work getting in and out but might be worth it. I know a guy that bow hunts it some and has seen a NICE one in there a few years in a row now. No shot at him yet, though..
I've hunted some behind McCool and Borrow Pit Lakes in area 4 and up in area 1 around Quarter Rd......
good place if you know where to go and when.....
