There are some kids who do not have time to hunt seriously because of sports as well. I have friends whose kids are booked as fall with kids sports.even on sundays. Only so many hours in a day.

I have a tons of students nowdays that have never killed a squirrel, rabbit, coon or quail. They believe hunting is sitting in shooting house overlooking a field of biologic. That do not appreciate the hunting heritage and diversity of hunting the volunteer state has to offer. They are just not as "invested" into the hunting experience as we were, so it is easier to walk away from.

Dead on the money. Excellent post.

Deer hunting used to be the pinacle of hunting, and something you had to work up to. First you had to learn patience and woodsmanship by becoming proficient at hunting small game.

Jumping right from a non-hunter directly into the most difficult form of hunting requiring the greatest patience and woodsmanship skills is not a recipe for recruiting young/new hunters.

A lot of great points in here...the avalibility of land to hunt and kick around on is a big one. However, I read a bood a bit back by a education guy (forget the name) that focuses on the difference in today's generation of male youth and my parents (Im 25).

It seems through a lot of different facets we are raising lazier men who are not motivated to work hard. They are calling it the failure to launch syndrom (yes after the movie). They talk about boys maturing mentally slower than girls and being overwhelemed early in their school carriers.

However, they two focuses that I really want to learn more about is the effects of video games on the neocortex and synapsis and the over perscribing of ADD meds.

How many gentlemen on here think they would have been placed on meds if they were coming through school today? I believe I would have.

I think many things take a small percentage and all of it together takes the huge percentage of kids away from hunting.

All of the above including loss of places to hunt, suburban buildup, lack of mentor/parent hunters etc..

But also I think a few are lost to.......

Peer pressure. IMO

A) Just as we are discusssing, MOST teenagers do NOT hunt. They spend their time playing video games, going to the mall, texting, TV, etc.. BUT they usually do that in small groups! Many kids are sorta "forced" into doing things other than hunting. If they want to spend time with their friends, they'll have to do stuff their friends do.

If you want to keep a kid hunting....take him AND his buddy! That keeps the herd together.

B) Peer influence (born out of MSM, Hollywood, Disney, yadda, yadda) about killing some bambi! Most people in general have become so separated from farm life and indoctrinated with PETA, Green, Save The Whales, on and on...they see killing something as morally bad" or "wrong" and as being against the environment.

They no longer "live" on the farm and no longer see the flip side of reality that life = death. Their visions of "circle of life" have been formed only by a cartoon movie or Hollywood "idol". Not biological reality.

They still love their hamburgers and chicken McNuggets! But they don't have to look those in the eye! So they live in their sanitarily, disinfected world of denial and look down on hunting as something that hurts "Mother Nature".

And without a hunting parent or mentor for those kids, they will never really question that image. Most will simply grow older and continue to think hunting is bad and never go out on their own to give it a try.

Camp,

I totally agree with your post.

When I was young, we simply did not have a fraction the other things to occupy our times as kids today. Back then, most of my peers both hunted and fished.

A couple of promising recent developments that are at least planting seeds to help spout more interest in hunting:

1) The archery in schools programs.

2) The competitive shooting programs.
