Didn't want to hijack richmanbbq's thread about the kids at the qdma show, which is an excellent thread. But wanted to throw out this question for 2 reasons. Because I have 2 young (6 year and 6 months) children and because I teach wildlife managament to secondary students. Why in your opinions are the number of kids interested in hunting declining. I have my ideas but I will wait to hear a few of yours.

Modern Technology: Kids don't get outdoors like the used too. Cell phones, video games, computers, and the list goes on...... They can kill deer on their T.V. or computer screens now... Sad but true..

Unfortunately I think its largely due to the fact that so many fewer kids are growing up in an environment where hunting is the norm and takes place throughout the family. So many areas have been developed and so many huge tracts of land lost to development that a lot of people who hunted from such ease of access, walking out the back door to the woodlot behind the house, just doesnt exist like it used to. I know for my kids also, finding friends at school that actually hunt is becoming much harder as well, just not as many that have the luxury of doing it!

Good points. I just bought my son a lifetime sportsman as well. Best bargain going.

Winchester stole some of my thoughts.
.... So many areas have been developed and so many huge tracts of land lost to development that a lot of people who hunted from such ease of access, walking out the back door to the woodlot behind the house, just doesnt exist like it used to. ...
I would also throw in leases. When I was growing up (39 now, so I'm not that old), my dad and I could take a short drive down the road and about any farmer would let us hunt. Now, it seems that they would let you, but they have leased the hunting right and can't. We just had too many things going on to have had a lease half way across the state.

Both my boys (5 yr & 17 mth) have the lifetime license. The 5 yr was upset he didn't get to go on the youth turkey hunt (he knew about it because of his twra calander). Going to take him to the woods when sql season opens. This past weekend while playing in a creek, he got to hold a water snake another boy had caught. Made his day. After that, he wanted to quit looking for crawdads and look for snakes. I don't think it has to do with tv, video games, etc... I believe it starts with the parents on what intrest a kid. I firmly believe what Winch stated.

This is a good topic of discussion.
I think several factors are involved, and with some kids they may not all apply.
The main culprit I see is kind of what GnB is alluding to, and that is short attention spans or wanting instant gratification, but I don't think that is necessarily just the kids. I have found myself falling into this as well. I have three daughters, and I took the oldest two with me a few times when they were younger. But, I practically had to bribe them to go, and let them bring stuff to "do". It didn't click with them.
I also think that it may be "too" easy for kids these days. It used to be a major deal just to see a deer or hear a turkey gobble. Not any more, and the kids may have a "did that, now let's do something else" mentality. We may actually be doing the kids a disservice by making it too easy for them to succeed.

We all need to take time to spend with our up and coming hunters for the sake of our sport. My kids are grown but there are kids out there that would love to have a mentor in hunting if given the chance...Please really think about this...it is that important...
