If you teach Wildlife Management, I am sure you are familiar with "Last child in The Woods". That book sums it up pretty well.

I would also throw in leases. When I was growing up (39 now, so I'm not that old), my dad and I could take a short drive down the road and about any farmer would let us hunt. Now, it seems that they would let you, but they have leased the hunting right and can't. We just had too many things going on to have had a lease half way across the state.

Everyone has hit all my points. Technology (especially video games), areas being developed, and hunting not being the norm in many areas nowa days, but my favorite one is what Buzz said about leases. Everyone defends them, but it is usually the people that can afford them that think they are so great. The problem with leases is, once people realize that they can make money off something, there is no going back to the old way. Just a fact..... I guess i should also add that liability is much higher today than in the past, thanks to progressive, liberal, law making.

All my son wanted to do was hunt before he actually went for the first time. After I took him I dont think it turned out to be exactly what he thought it would be. Lots of walking then lots of sitting still. Definately not what it was portrayed to him on the TV shows he watched. One mistake I made was making him stay past the point he wanted to be done. I think that probaly lead to to him not being so eager to go last year. When you have a child who starts getting ancy and bored there is no since being out there anyway as you can be assured you wont see any deer when they wont sit still or be quiet. Last year I kind of backed off and only took him on a couple of hunts and left when he wanted to leave. Hopefully as he ages a little he will realize there is more gratification to being out there than just killing something.

I think we as parents are also to blame. At dinner time, we make them eat their desert last, at christmas we save the best gift for last, but when it comes to hunting, it seems many fathers take them from the hunter safety course to the deer stand. I bet most of us, like myself, cut our teeth in squirrel woods, or rabbit hunting, quail hunting or hunting bull frogs with our first 22 or shotgun. Deer hunting was something we worked up to after years of honing or skills and accuracy shooting at tiny targets. So when we finally did start deer hunting we already serious hunters who paid their dues. Now I think many kids have hit the "climax" of their hunting experience too soon and move on to something else. I have a tons of students nowdays that have never killed a squirrel, rabbit, coon or quail. They believe hunting is sitting in shooting house overlooking a field of biologic. That do not appreciate the hunting heritage and diversity of hunting the volunteer state has to offer. They are just not as "invested" into the hunting experience as we were, so it is easier to walk away from.

Good point redblood. My nephew is 5 and all he wants to do is deer hunt and i must say that me and my brother have kind of nurtured his desire to go deer hunting, but now that you said that i do think he should start small and graduate up. I started with a BB gun, then a .22 and then a shot gun. I started hunting in VA the shot gun and then the rifle when i moved here.

Yep, I believe it is epidemic but if you watch the outdoor channel you can see why. All they do is deer hunt and maybe a few turkey hunts. If you watched the outdoor channel, you would think north america has 2 or 3 game animals.

Btw bone collector, I ran by the farm today where the dove shoot will be and there are standing sunflowers. So that will be the attractant.

I do not by into the Technology even being a Factor in this. I had plenty of early vidieo games Atari such growning up and still wanted to go outdoors. In fact I thik these new Hunting and Fishiing Games Help more than Hurt.

I beleive there is a lot of factors, many already mentioned, but the Biggest a lack of somebody to take them. Thanks to you who can and do.
