NO you can not bait them,...and you can not even feed them during the off season.....
and blind luck ain't got jack to with finding them or hunting them successfuly...neither does baiting.....they are not that difficult of an animal to pattern...certainly no harder than a deer and alot easier to pattern than hogs are...imo

Why can't you feed them during the off season?
I dont know, but would guess it would have something to do with the bears seeing people as food/food providers. In other words a safety issue, for the baiters, and for some poor smuck who just happened to wander by.

LOL!! If that was the case, why do they use bait in places like Saskatchewan. Alberta, etc where they have 30 times the ebar numbers we do??

Unless bears are keyed in on a specific food source in a small area, hunting them like you do a deer is nearly impossible to be consistently successful.

.

Several do in fact. In fact, it is better for hound hunters to bait hounds because it keeps them form turning loose on a small bear because they can see the tracks that have hit the bait before releasing their hounds.

I would say that they bait in these places partly because of the terrain and vegetation, to draw out and concentrate mulitiple bears into spots that are easier to access for their clients... as well the simple convieniance of being able to succesfuly turn over multiple hunters in a timely manner with the least effort involved...a way to maximize to the most return with the least effort and investment. Not much differant than throwing out corn for deer...it is a business decision as much as anything else in my opinion.

LOL!! ...that exact same statment can be said for hunting most any animal, including deer...I do agree that specific food sources are the key, but the overall size of the area(s) being used and the chances of consistant success are relative to the bear population in a given area, as with most any other animal...

unmolested bears are fairly consistant in their normal routines, not much differant from deer imo... they don't just wander around aimlessly untill a dog makes em do what they are supposed to do. A bear may not come back into a food source its using once or twice a day like deer often do but they will be generally be back thru within two or three days, often by the exact same travel routes... and add multiple bears using the same avialable food sources and the odds of seeing one goes even higher...it just takes one bear and you are successfuly tagged out for the year...is patterning and still hunting bear (or deer) as easy as throwing out some kind of bait? maybe not,....but its far from impossible...

I am not suggesting that I can guarantee me or anyone else a shot at one...I'm just saying it is more feasable than what many folks would want you to beleive...

I have always hunted the south cherokee, but still hunters are just not allowed into the prime bear areas...it seems the north section has the largest archery kills. I don't know if they have the same problem with loose dogs like thier is in the tellico area...that is the direction I am thinking of looking into...I got a cousin that works for the forest service up there....

were kind of in the wrong forum on this topic...

Bear baits in TN are used for many purposes :), all the way from being a decoy to being the target point where the tracking collar is triggered and the gig is on! ;\) I dont bear hunt in TN very much at all but I know enough in the business to know the tricks to the trade so to speak. Bear hunters take their sport very serious and the technology being used now would really surprise a lot of people, in what actually goes on behind the scenes! Its like the Mafia on the MTN in some areaS!! \:D

Let me guess..They have unmanned drones loaded with live ammo flying over the mountains as well. LOL!

If you call a basic tracking collar on their dogs, a CB radio and a cooler full of potted meat and crackers "technology", then I guess your assumptions are correct. LOL! The things bear hunters are accused of if ridiculous sometimes. They are more dedicated and put more time and money and legwork into their "sport" than any other hunting niche I have come to know.

You obviously misunderstood my post, and yes I agree they are absolutely a dedicated bunch! A tracking collar on a dog is the farthest thing from what I was calling technology! I am making no assumptions, simply mentioned just a few things, anyhow carry on, this isnt for a talk forum anyhow.
