I never call at random.
Sometimes, while I'm walking to my stand,(in the dark) I'll stop and blow softly a couple times, thinking if a deer is close by, maybe it wouldn't spook if it thought I was another deer going thru. Otherwise, I don't use a call unless I see a buck that is moving away...then I'll try to get its attention, and hopefully get him comin my way. I think calling randomly just gives my location away.

Calling in a real world situation, is situational for sure. I've
had it work a couple of times. My biggest buck to date was a
worrier. After I passed on a small six point buck that seemed
worried, I let him get out of sight and used a grunt and can call.
I know now what the 6 pointer was worried about. I had no idea
that the 12 point double droptine buck was around, but the little
buck gave me some clues.

I have been successful using the grunt more so 10 to 15 years ago than in the last 5 or 7 years.....what has worked more has been the can call in the last 8 or so years but there have been times when even that wasnt necessarily working either.....I dont go to the woods without either once gun season opens.....and MZ too but it isnt as successful in the early season but now that we have it so close to gun i believe it will be better in that second week than the first
