When the middle of October rolls around and we get that first killing frost im ready. I used to get pumped for the bow opener, but Ive lost all interest in that the past few years.

When I'm on stand in a hand picked spot that looks like it has great potential and the rut is set to start any minute and a doe busts through the area right by my stand looking "antsy", and just out of sight I hear that familiar trotting and grunting sound but just can't spot the buck doing it yet. The next few seconds is why I deer hunt.

Just nearing the season, but mainly the cooling off of the weather coming into Fall.

The first sit in my stand after the long haul to my tree at LBL. Couple that with a nice sunrise and some early deer movement and it just doesn't get any better IMO.

You just hit the nail directly on the head!!!!
I love to hear footsteps in the leaves. the next few seconds until the deer appears is MAGIC!!!

For me there's two distinct things that get me primed for deer season.
First, it's that first really good frost. It's that cleanness that seems to be in the air that first COLD morning. You all know the one. The one that smells a little bit different from all the ones that came before it and maybe even a bit differently than those that will follow. I especially love that first cold , clear morning just before daylight when the darkness seems to linger just a bit longer than a normal day.
And secondly, it's the first sighting of the season. We all see deer pretty much all year long, but it's just not the same to me. Being in the stand and seeing the first deer of the season is special and something that always gets me going.....!
Thanks and enjoy your season, it's getting closer!!
Good luck
Ditto also for me , but that first sighting gets my heart a pounding !!

A lot of times it has nothing to do with a hunt. I enjoy running the beautiful country roads around mt house. The day a few yrs back it was mid october and I was running past a field of late standing corn the farmer hadn't cut. The sky was blue, the maples were yellow and a cool north wind began to gently rattle those dry corn stalks and it it hit me. It is time to deer hunt.

Frost, high pressure, clear blue skys, leaves turning, insects are dead, and a fresh giant rub and scrape.

Getting me "primed" for deer season? You mean really EXCITED about what's coming?
It's not early bow season, although I do participate.
I think for me it is usually two things that work together, with these two things together being 10 times more exciting than either alone.
1) Being "on to" a mature buck where I'm hunting, or going to be hunting in the coming days or weeks.
2) The first cold front in October that drops the dawn temperatures into the 30's (with or without that big frost).
I know, can get "lucky" in early archery, but in my mind, I really don't have "high" odds of getting what I'm after until the weather turns cooler. Sometime after mid-October, my pumper is really getting primed.

It used to be opening day of bow season for me but not anymore. I really get primed when leaves start changing, cool-frosty mornings in October. I see more bucks and more deer movement at this time than any other time in archery season. The "smell" of the woods at this time is like my wife's favorite perfume...it just does something for me.
