Pretty awesome place...A little expensive, but awesome....

I have hunted up there 3 times... All 3 times I have seen huge bucks from the stand... The last time I was there a very nice 8-pt walked the trail that I came in on and bedded touching the tree that I was in..... He stayed there for 2 whole hours then I had to pee.....Too bad it was a doe only hunt...

Another time I busted a 110lb doe on top of the mountain... She came in just a few minutes after a nice 6 and 8 had left.... They were all 10-yds from me and did not have a clue... Except for the Bang! Flop!

I live in Memphis and if my "group" gets drawn we'll be heading that way for a weekend of hunting... obviously only 1 day at Holston though....

I've done a TON of research on this place and I'm very excited.

BRING ON A DROPTINE!

being active duty military does not help your chances at all, nothing but luck goes into getting drawn for this hunt. On a better note i am very lucky for the job i have and get to enjoy looking at these beasts all year 12 hours a day and have seen 2 different drop tine bucks so far in velvet. one double drop and one single drop! As long as everyone in your group has military status, active/non active, veteran status, you will be increasing your chances. Unless something has changed in rescent years (there have been alot of new rules implementd) Veterans do get prioity preference.
I hope you the very best of luck. I hope you and your group gets drawn, make the drive, bust a doe early and lay the smack down on a good one! At least get a doe down so you can come back on the buck hunt!!! ARCHERY HUNTERS, this place could be a dream hunt!

your right about bieng a bowhunters dream. the bow only stands are the only place to be!! they only have 25 bow stands and only draw either 10 or 15 bow hunters per hunt.

yes u can use scents there, also due to a snowstorm last year the late november hunt was canceled and those 70 or 80 hunters get first choice of hunts this year.. also their stands are only maybe 10 feet off the ground and most are only 50 yards from the road and every hour or 2 they will drive around by you.. also that place is criss crossed with 8 foot tall chainlink fence and every stand i was in had the fence running by it somehow but they say u can shoot a deer on either side of the fence.most of the stands i would have had to shoot through the fence.. the place is full of turkeys and coyotes.

Active duty personnel who provide written documentation of their active duty status do not have to provide a local back ground check.

AD and DAV do get priority staus but must provide some form of written documentation verifying their status.

Your right Worm82 last year was a bad year, not many deer killed or seen. The problem is that the people that hang these stands really don't have any knowledge I think of stand placement. Don't get me wrong you do see alot of big deer in open fields or driving to and from your stand but the chances of even getting a shot at a doe is slim. Year before last I got to finally get a filter plant stand after 12 and the volunteers that was working the hunts actually performed (not really drives) but they tried to make sure that deer would come in your general direction. This is for sure a chance to see some monsters but a chance to actually sling an arrow from the 5ft high stands is slim. Maybe everybody should put in for Holston and just forget about Presidents Island...LOL!

The people who hang these stands are some of the most dedicated and knowlegable hunters you will ever be around. Actually, our time is donated, hour upon hour during the summer and the three hunt requirement assisting the drawn hunters. Each stand is placed in it's location because of the higher probability of hunter success. BTW......they are sixteen feet and you should try to raise and secure one without help...... ;\)

I got a question about the background checks. My buddy that I hunt with got a dui when he was in his early 20's. Good guy just made a poor decision. Would something like this keep him from gettund drawn? Heck he had to get one earlier this year to coach baseball and nothing was said.
