Let's talk abit about each individual's year round methods concerning deer hunting and preparation.

I don't own land and don't do food plots so my off season is pretty much non-existant. meaning that I mostly just sit and wait for the season to come back around.

I do take some stands down and store them for the off season. I do some "after season" scouting to be better prepared for the next season. I have one trail camera that I will put out and move around. I usually wait until about a month before the season and go through the bow season with the camera in a few specific areas, mainly out of curiousity.

I guess my main goal in the off season is to plan everything out to the last detail, especially when it comes to stand placement. By now, I pretty much know where my stands will be , but I normally wait until about a month before the season to put them out. I normally keep two spare stands that i can move around if need be.

I'd be interested in hearing what you have done since the end of last season and what you still need to do to get ready for this season.

You may convince me to do something that I am not presently doing....

No one's tactics are right or wrong here. I have friends that go to their deer woods every weekend, all year long. I don't. I guess that I am just curious as to what you do versus what I and others do....

Thanks ahead for your contribution to this thread. This should be interesting.

good luck this season......

i keep a trophy rock out all year, refreshing when needed. we only have about 22 acres, all woods, so no food plots. i have 2 cameras, 1 on the TR and one i move around. some trail maintenance and keeping shooting lanes cleared. the ladder stand stays out all year but we remove the straps to get them out of the weather. they'll be replaced about mid sept.

My outdoor intrests go far beyond just deer hunting...but while I am out and about in the woods I do keep up with the avialbility, location and condition of the current mast crops like acorns, grapes, blue berry and such...specificly as they relate to not only deer but grouse, squirrels, bears and more....

I don't do plots, minerals or anything else.....but if I am hiking or fishing a creek or river during the spring or summer I will often walk out trails or crossings that I come accross...I have learned alot that way and found a few good isolated stands over the years...

HaHa I do a lota that too....I've been hunt'n the same property for the last 16yrs., so I know it pretty well. I havn't moved any stands in about 10yrs.....they are all producers. I do take a climb'r now and then, just for a change of scenery sometimes. I refresh my "licks" every 3-4 mos., and check and clear shoot'n lanes as necessary.....I don't use TC's cause I know the deer are there, by the sign....I like surprises....other than that, I just shoot as much as I can and sit and WAIT!!!

I don't do much of anything. Sometimes the inlaw that hunts it might change up a stand or two, or maybe put a food plot ocassionally. Just whenever he gets a wild hair. But for the most part, it is left alone.

Sometime in the summer, I get a hankering to shoot my rifles. If time allows, and if it's not TOO hot, I'll shoot them. Otherwise, I'll wait til October--and sometimes as late as November-- to make sure they're sighted in.

(yes, I am a procrastinator)

Sometime in October, I'll start getting my clothes/boots/gear ready. I keep them in a rubbermaid tote, and I'll wash the tote and the clothes. I'll be ready on the muzzleloader opener. The weather will be cooler and the leaves will be changing by then, and I'll feel more like hunting. If it's warm, it just ain't good hunting for me.

After the season ends in January, I try to do some post season scouting/small game hunting. Sometimes I actually do it, sometimes I don't...it just depends on what else I have going on in my life.

This is the kind of thread I like to see on here. A thread where everyone can share and learn something.

For me, I start scouting immediately when deer season ends. I do this for several reasons. I don't have to worry about spooking deer out of the area, there are no snakes and insects, there is a lot of deer sign still visible, cooler temps, etc. A lot can be learned during this time period.

In the Spring things are kind of slow. During this period, I will go over topo and arial maps. I even do this for the property I have hunted for years. Sometimes you find places that you have just missed.

In the Summer months I start glassing the fields. One time I was after a certain buck and I would get up early every morning before work just to watch this buck. I did the same thing every evening. After a while, I knew this buck's pattern very well. That same buck is now on my wall and scores over 160.

In early September is when I start putting all of the information that I have gained over the past year together and forming my plan.

I also run my trail cameras 365 days a year.

To me, scouting is almost as fun as the actual hunt. I love preparing for deer season. I know big bucks make mistakes but they don't do it very often. They get big for a reason. You can buy all of the deer hunting gimmicks out there but nothing will replace having your boots on the ground and scouting.

I scout year round.

Winter: put in new trails and pull treestands. On public ground I get out every time there is a snow and scout.

Spring:during turkey I am constantly more focused on having my GPS in new areas than actually killing a bird.
Replenish salt licks, and do food plot work

Summer: I start watching fields and run trail cameras.
