How many of us pass on the buck(s) we see during the first few days of the gun season? If so what is the reason?
Kindly, TennesseeWhiskey

i pass on "smaller" bucks. i try to kill a deer i would want to mount, what ever that might be. i take several does throughout the season to keep my desire to kill satisfied.

Depends on what they are and what the potential of the place I am hunting on is and if there is meat in the freezer.
If I am hunting public land with little potential, and i have no meat in the freezer then no i won't pass on any buck, but if I have meat i will let it pass on personal preference.
If I am hunting a private farm and there is good potential I would probably let it pass if it was young, but if i was really wanted some meat in the freezer, then I may shoot it, but probably not.

I have passed on some that I regreted and never got a second chance at. If only have one buck tag left usually ill pass on everything hoping for a better buck. Heck if I get one decent buck a season im happy, and ill shoot 4 or 5 nanner heads to cure my itchy trigger finger.

Over time, my definition of a "shooter" buck (for me personally) has changed significantly. And it has little to do with whether it's the beginning or ending of the season, little to do with whether I've already taken a buck (this year) or not.
At one time, I would only shoot bucks with 8 or more points. Should also state "that time" came after I had taken many bucks with fewer than 8 points. Then I found out that many of the bucks I was killing were just top-end yearlings and 2 1/2's. Took a while, but eventually figured out that the number of "points" over an inch long, has virtually nothing to do with the size of the antlers. I became more impressed (from a personal "trophy" perspective) with the size of the antlers. I even now consider a 6-pointer scoring 130 a far more impressive "trophy" than a 12-pointer scoring 140. I'm particularly impressed with "mass" and "uniqueness", and really couldn't care less whether a buck is a 9-pointer or an 8-pointer.
For the past few years, it's been mainly an issue of "age" rather than antlers as my criteria in defining a "shooter" buck. Although I do find a larger antlered mature buck a better trophy than a smaller antlered one.
Typically, I'm specifically hunting for one or more known 5 1/2 or older mature bucks. That doesn't mean I won't take an unknown buck that I encounter. I consider any 4 1/2 an acceptable shooter, and by having that standard, a mistake would be a 3 1/2. I can be happy with that, but understand many people could not. I do have years where I don't kill a buck. Just doesn't bother me.
Yet even with a focus mainly on age, I admit the antlers matter to me. Over the years I've passed up several 4 1/2-yr-old bucks mainly because they had smaller than average antlers. I've even passed up some fully mature bucks for the same reason, but usually in conjunction to my not wanting to stop hunting by using my last or only buck tag, and being aware that much better "trophies" were around.
I tend to enjoy hunting more than seeing how fast I can go thru my buck tags, which is only one (1) annually for some of the places I hunt. Besides, after dragging out a few does, I tend to get lazy, and don't even want to think about having to loose precious hunting time by dragging out another deer.

If it ain't going on the wall I will not shoot any buck no matter what Not a bad way of "deciding". Easier to drag does, and does are typically a little better eating. Plus, any buck you pass, at least has potential to be around next year when you might want to put him on the wall.
And as I have stated and proven repeatedly, the hunter who passes up a particular buck this year --- he's the very hunter with the greatest opportunity to harvest that particular buck next year.
